granched

Hi everyone

I was re-reading King of Attolia this weekend (and enjoying all of the discussions on the listserv) and had a couple of questions.

I couldn't find the word "granched" in the dictionary or on wiki (Gen threatens to have some attendants granched in KofA when they want him to stop climbing on the roof of the palace). I just had to define it for someone at work after telling them (jokingly) that I would him granched if he didn't turn in something to me by noon. I used to threaten to march him over to the zoo and feed them to the yak but this has since proved to be a hollow threat. Does anyone know where it's from? Is it French? We spent a fair amount of time this morning trying to figure out where it came from. He asked me where I heard it and I told him I read it somewhere...

Also, in my re-read, I am trying to figure out how much Ornon knew of Gen's plans for acting like a buffoon up front. Attolia seems to know what is going on but Ornon seems to be pretty nervous for a while that Gen is actually failing and there is that great scene where he's trying to glare at Gen at dinner and he wonders if The Thief is gone forever. What do people think?

This is one of those "Have you read...?" posts. I thought you lot might have a) encountered this one and b) have an opinion. If you haven't, you might enjoy it; I imagine the main character might look a bit familiar.

Right. So, has anyone read The Name of the Wind? It's by Patrick Rothfuss (new author) and the book itself is new enough to still be in hardcover in Barnes and Noble. I was seduced by the blurb on the inside flap - "I have been called Kvothe the Bloodless, Kvothe the Arcane, and Kvothe Kingkiller. I have earned those names. Bought and paid for them. But I was brought up as Kvothe. My father once told me it meant "to know." I have, of course, been called many other things. Most of them uncouth, altough very few were unearned."

Kvothe is a Hero (not your garden variety hero), and obviously owes a great deal like Ursula LeGuin's Ged of Earthsea. He's so precocious it hurts sometimes, and a great believer in the "I can do anything I want" principal to the point where he does remind me, a bit, of Gen. He's also quite cheeky, which I always appreciate.

At any rate, I'm slightly conflicted as to whether I overall enjoyed the silly thing, and I was wondering if there was anyone else out there with an opinion.

Cheers.

I thought this would be fun... in chatzy emerald said a list similar to this might have already been made awhile ago, but didn't know when or where... and we don't mind repeating things too much, right? (How many times have I read KoA since July?)

You know you've been reading the Queen's Thief books too much when...

a few from chat:

Rosalee: You want to be Eddis when you grow up

Rosalee: you make sure that, as you're reading, Eddisians say Eeddis and Sounisians/Attolians say Eddis

Rosalee: you're a member of this community...

emerald: You talk about Costis and Gen. All the time

emerald: You phone up the travel agents and try book a holiday in Eddis

emerald: You have a pet sheep called Ornon, Aulus and Boagus

emerald: *some pet sheep

Alinnea: You baa like a sheep every time someone says rich. (Rosalee's addition: or you could bark like a sheepdog instead. Arf, arf, bark, bark, bark, yap yap.)

Alinnea: You try to dunk your cousins in a well.

emerald: You insist on keeping your old shoes

emerald: You think of Gen and Irene when you eat oranges. HOMG I DO THIS ONE

emerald: You got set up with a character from the books and are still going out with him. o.O

Alinnea: You think of Gen every time you see an earing.

Rosalee: you check to make sure you still have your earings regularly

If you haven't seen one of these lists before, you probably get the idea by now. I'm excited to see what you all think up! :)
