Someone was asking about Paul O. Zelinsky's excellent artwork in RotT, and also about the map on the inside covers, since the ebook really doesn't include clear images of them. I took pictures of both, for those who want to see.

It's not great quality but I couldn't find the pictures online and I couldn't bear to squish my beautiful hardback book in the scanner.

Did you know that the map from the book was created by Maxime Plasse? I didn't! Until I found her deviantart account when I searched Google images for a copy of the map.

Check this out. She posted the map on her deviantart (a very high-res version!) but she also had some very interesting comments about the commission:

"A map commissionned by Harper Collins Publishers for Megan Whalen successfull serie "Queens Thief". The map is supposed to be a subjective vision of some people of the world (mainly from the regions of Attolia, Sounis and Eddis) hence it is heavily and artificially distorded to focus on those regions and also on the Mede territory, an ancestral ennemy if I understood good. The world depicted in Queen's thief is loosely based on a antique mediteranean culture.
Harper Collins also asked me to leave the title/text box empty so they'd deal with it on their own."

Subjective version! Heavily and artificially distorted! I think we had some fans speculating that that was the case, but did we know for sure before now?

I love that even the publishers are all in on the unreliable narration of this world.

So....this is too good not to share, but don't ask how I got it.

I have been told that this link will not last forever, and it may go down sometime next week. I will try to remember to remove the post when that happens.

Finally, a MAP!

Today, MWT posted on her tumblr feed: "The Thief was published twenty years, four months, and 23 days ago. Twenty years, four month and *21* days ago, people started asking me for a map. The wait is almost over. My editor says she is sending it to me tomorrow and I will post it here."

Later in the day, she posted the image below. Is this the map we've been waiting for (It is not completely clear to me)? It looks AH-MAYZ-ING.

So, the inscription on the side says (to the best of my understanding), "This map of Eddis, Attolia, and Sounis was prepared for Her Highness Gitta Kingsdaughter by her tutor, Tykus Namikus for her reference while reading the books of the Queen's Thief."

So....if this IS the official map...who is Gitta? Royalty, obviously, but from which family/country? DISCUSS.

Sounis guestmap

I was browsing the Sounis guestmap to see who all has added a pin recently, and the answer is--no one! Not a pin has been added in 2013. Time to remedy that.

New to Sounis? Post a pin in the Sounis Map! Queen's Thief fans are from all over the world--add your location to the guestmap.

To add your location: 1. Click on the guestmap link. 2. Zoom in on your location. 3. Sign your name, choose your icon, add a message. 4. Click "place". The map can zoom in to the level of individual streets, so to avoid giving your address away online don't zoom in too far when placing your pin.

You can click "message board" at the bottom of the page to read what everyone commented when they place their pins.

LTUE or Woo-hoo!

Had to create a new LJ account. Okay.

Went to LTUE and got to meet Megan. Just as you'd expect from a person who writes very cool books, MWT is a very cool person ("cool" being a literary term obviously borrowed from academia)(MWT being pronounced "mwhit"). As a logical corollary, the Sounisians I met were great. Thanks especially to Heather, Kim, Susan, Steve, and Bonnie for seat-saving and camaraderie, not to mention wit (being "mwhit" without the m). The whole conference was wonderful, actually. Happy sigh.

As for persistent not telling, well, you know the drill. But there was a surprising half second of relenting in the matter of the map.

Pigrescuer posted about the map situation we have with Queen's Thief and it got me inspired! So I spent an hour flipping through The Thief and writing down all the geographical references I found. It's by no means exhaustive, but here it is.

I think this can also be a good time for everyone else to add what they know about the geography of the QT world, so we can start putting together all the data and collaborate on the perplexing issue of the map.

I tried to remember to cite where in the book I found each reference, but I didn't write down page numbers, only chapters, since I'm using an old version. And I included which day of the journey it is as they're traveling, to help with distances, hopefully.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, and I can't remember what MWT said on this subject in her introductions. With that disclaimer made, I was wondering if anyone has any speculations about geographically where Sounis, Eddis and Attolia would be. I've always assumed they were in the vicinity of Greece, but I found out that the general region around Turkey is also known as Anatolia. The Mediterranean region even has a mountain range, the Taurus mountains. I realize Turkey was pretty solidly Byzantine, but assuming there's some serious alternate history, it's approximately between the Romans and the Persians.

Any thoughts?

East, West, North, South

My eighth grader are reading The Thief. Last week, we were reading aloud and found that in the book it said North, but on my kindle, it said "South" I do not remember which page it was, and I thought it was just my Kindle, BUT, today it happened again. On page 44 of one of the books it said "west to the foothills and east to the main road" Publish date 1998. The other one,(page 57) which is newer and my Kindle are opposite. Could this be why our interpretation for the maps are different? Have I stumbled upon a conspiracy?

"Not Telling"

We sent these questions to mwt and got back the infamous "Not Telling" response. So what do YOU think? :).

Don't worry about the numbers they don't correspond because I took some questions out. If it really bothers you, however, just let me know!

1. (real question) Do they celebrate birthdays in Eddis?

3. In KoA, Gen stays up with Relius during the "dog watch of the night" we assume he knows this is the worst hour because he's been through it, we're wondering who stayed up with Gen during that time?

5. What was Attolia's mother like?

6. How come we don't see any of Gen's numerous brothers and sisters visit him after he comes back from Attolia? Particularly Stenides. (From the book we know that he doesn't have any other visitors besides his father and Eddis)

7. Does Stenides still live in Eddis's palace? Is he married?

8. In The Theif Gen mentions all his siblings have the same father. There is some speculation about if they have the same mother? (Can you confirm/deny?)

9. What was Attolia's childhood like? Did she ever have any friends?

10. Was there a possible romance between Attolia and Relius (that Attolia was not aware of)?

12. Gen's father, MoW was known to be strict, can we say the same for his Grandfather?

13. Who are Eugenides's true friends? Do you believe a monarchs/sovereign leaders can have true friends?

14. A lot of people ship Eddis and Magus, was there a possible intention behind this? Are the Magus and Eddis just friends?

15. How do you come up with the plot lines? Do you have the whole thing planned out?

16. The book deals with love marriages, and marriage for political reasons. What do you believe about love? Do you think people should marry for love?

17. How was the marriage between Gen's mother and father?

18. Did Gen see his mother fall?

Have at it!!! Also, you ARC-ers, try to keep everything spoiler free, but I think it's okay if you say 'oh some of these questions will get answered in the mere future'

One of the things that I've found most interesting about the latest update from Greenwillow (of course I wasn't caught swooning! Don't be ridiculous...) is the /inclusion of a map./ Ever since Eugenides, the Magus, Pol and the Uselesses trekked across all three borders in the Thief, I've been curious to know exactly how the Eddisian mountains are laid out. I've made a few attempts myself, based on the info we have in the books about the Dystopia, the Sea of Olivers, and the sparse mention of major bodies of water... but they don't seem coherent or book-jacket worthy. If anybody else has come up with a design, I'd love to see it!

I came across this community a few months ago, when I was reading The Thief. Didn't really explore it back then to avoid spoilers, but made a mental note to come back once I've read the next two books. Now I have, so hello :-)

Hello fellow Sounisians!

It being my summer holidays, there is always such a lot to do. LIKE: Obsessing over Gen and his world, making notes from books, and drawing maps!!

SO: Here is a map I drew of the countries of Eddis, Attolia, and Sounis, though not in that order.

( Concrete evidence that I have too much free time... )

Mostly self-explanatory :) The Gede Valley is where Costis' family lives, although I extrapolated the Gede River. Magyar is a country mentioned on pg. 150 of KoA, bordering Attolia in the North-East. The Eutoas River in Sounis is where Sophos' father has a villa, which Sophos metions at the end of The Thief. I decided that Kathodicia is not actually a province of Attolia, but a separate country, because it was large enough for Gerosthenes to be 'Annux of all Kathodicia'.

AND, since I was taking so long getting myself organised, pigrescuer sent me a map she drew. PR drew this pre-KoA, which means no Magyar, but otherwise, we have a lot of the same things. Lol, which is good.
PR also has the routes taken by Gen and co. in The Thief and the soldiers in QoA marked, in shades of red pencil, and complete with a little circle around Ephrata XD

If LJ likes me today, I think clicking on the maps will bring up bigger images.

Critiques? Corrections? Comments? I like :D

Edited to say: I've re-jigged the pictures. If you click on them they will both now (fingers crossed) take you to a bigger copy, and if you then click again, to a very high-resolution view. Sorry if everyone already knows this, but it's new to me!

Sounis has been growing steadily over the past year, and at such a rate that we hit the maximum number of markers allowed on our guest map recently.

Checkers, my tireless fellow Supermod, began the search for a new map. Our search ended here:

The new map should allow us more markers. Go and put a marker up, whether you posted on the old map or not, and let Megan see how many fans she has across the world!

To add your location: 1. Click on the guestmap link. 2. Zoom in on your location. 3. Sign your name, choose your icon, add a message. 4. Click "place".

The new map can also be reached from The Sounis profile page under the big flashing button that says 'click here - view my guestmap'. The old map will still be available from a link on the profile page if anyone wants to check their old message before placing a marker on the new map.

Mapping Gen's World

There was a recent discussion in the Conspiracy Room about what Gen’s world would look like. We ended up deciding the god/goddess of maps should really just take pity on us and let us have a map, but before we got to that point, there was some interesting discussion. Among the things that we thought about were: how many coasts the various countries had, who were their neighbors (if any), and how the different countries were set up in relation to each other. Check the backlog in chatzy for complete ideas!

( Discussed by everyone in the Conspiracy Room about an hour ago. Mariah started it (incredibly determined, logical, good at geography) and typed it up. One gold star for Mariah! )

Confused by Direction

I'm trying to draw a map of Sounis, Eddis and Attolia, but I immediately ran into a big problem at the beginning.

In The Thief, p.24, "When we reached the docks,we turned and rode along beside them toward the north gate out of the city." But in p.26, "At the south gate we went once again through a cool tunnel,...." So which direction did they head off?

And later, again the problem with north and south, in p.46, "...we climbed the the hills that led up to the mountains in the north of the country." In p.66, "The country ( Eddis ) was narrow and ran along the top of the mountain ranges to the south and southeast of Sounis." So is Eddis in the north or south of Sounis?

I'm completely confused by this. I wonder if I comprehended these sentences wrong. Can somebody tell me what the matter is? Thank you!! ( It seems that I'm always asking questions. )

The Sounis map is up! We have members from countries throughout the world. Now you can show us where you live, and show Megan where her readers come from.

Click on "user info" to the left, then follow the directions for clicking on the map and adding your information.

Edit: Jade raised a good point about privacy. Does anyone know of a way to make the map available for members only? Regardless, we might all want to be pretty general about our locations.
