Two days ago, Monica Endinger posted this on her blog:

…. a little bird told me the next two [Queen's Thief books] are in the home stretch of being finished and coming out some time in the not-too-far-off future. First the publisher will reissue the original four to bring a new generation of readers to them and then….numbers five and six.

Maybe we'll have a new book this year? I don't know, but I'm so excited I could almost dance on a roof!

After many ~~hours days months~~ idle moments obsessing over our Book 5 words (dirt, gold, slave, lion, ship), I've figured out what MWT was trying to tell us!

Clearly, it's an anagram for "Sophos Averting Dill Lid." Must be some nasty pickles... or some tightly sealed jars. Sophos can't have that causing problems in Sounis, and he cleverly averts the problem by giving them to Gen, who couldn't open them anyway because of his hand. But Gen realizes their potential and ultimately ends up thwarting the Mede... by sending the emperor a shipment of dill pickle jars that HE CAN NEVER OPEN. THE HORROR. THE CRUELTY. DUN DUN DUN.

More funny Sophos anagrams found here! I also liked the idea of Sophos opening a dental office, but unless the Mede emperor had a lot of cavities, Gen couldn't use that to his advantage. ;)

(In other news, I think I'm going slightly crazy in the interim... anyone else want to analyze animal imagery [especially in ACoK!!! Lions and foxes, oh my!] or cry over potential parallels between the stories of the gods and Gen's fate [WHAT ABOUT GOD EUGENIDES HAVING HIS BROTHER DIE IN HIS ARMS] while we wait for Book 5?)

As of yesterday, it has been five years since CoK was released. I think we're due.

Yet, no news. Interviews from MWT have dwindled. Sounis has grown quiet. The majority of posts by its members tend to be about other fandoms, or asking for reading suggestions. Because we have NOTHING to read.

I am pleased to report that a new Cordelia Vorkosigan novel has been
sold to Baen Books for publication, tentatively, in February of 2016.

The title is _Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen_.

It is not a war story. It is about grownups.

And that is probably all I ought to say right now in a venue read by the
spoiler-sensitive. It is, after all, a long haul till next February.

2016 will also mark the 30th anniversary of my first publication by
Baen, which ought to be good for a little PR fun.

As I've had a spectacular weekend of MWT " not telling " us about the upcoming books my mind is weaving through all the possibilities.

One of the signatures of this series is the reveal. Even on the Nth read through I love seeing all those things I missed and my mistaken assumptions. There's a huge satisfaction in seeing the characters around Gen see him finally unveiled.

And I've just realized...it's an ever-expanding circle of revelation, of inclusion.

Dear Megan,

After giving you our best birthday wishes, we thought we'd mix it up a little. In honor of the upcoming debut of The Hobbit movie (no, not that one), we thought we'd celebrate your birthday hobbit-style.

As it says in The Fellowship of the Ring:

[Bilbo] gave away presents to all and sundry--the latter were those who went out again by a back way and came in again by the gate. Hobbits give presents to other people on their birthdays. Not very expensive ones, as a rule, and not so lavishly as on this occasion; but it was not a bad system. Actually in Hobbiton and Bywater every day in the year it was somebody's birthday, so that every hobbit in those parts had a fair chance of at least one present at least once a week. But they never got tired of them.

In this spirit, we'd like to ask for just little things, namely, details we'd like to see in the next book. Nothing huge or spoilery, just fun. So come out, you little furry-footed Sounisians, and make your requests known! And don't worry about sneaking out through the back way--we have a revolving gate. :-)

After all, it's her birthday, my loves, and we wants it.

Books that should have sequels, but don't

Some years ago, a newsletter about books to which I subscribed had us write in for an article about books that in our opinions should have had sequels, but didn't. Someone called it "Books Without Equals We Wish Had Had Sequels," which I loved.

So - leaving out any books that have come out so recently they probably will have sequels if we give the author five minutes to breathe, and leaving out series that stopped too soon (like Antonia Forest's Marlow family books - although now I find that someone else has written the "next book," whose arrival I'm awaiting with trepidation because what if it's terrible?), (which actually would make a good post on its own), what are some books that you think need sequels (and don't you just love parentheses)?

I can think of several, even at 2:30 in the morning when I'm staring at a computer screen when I should be sleeping but woke up abruptly and can't get my eyes to close again. Several of these are ones I just mentioned in the WSK post, which is what made me think of them.

THE WONDERFUL YEAR, by Nancy Barnes (which I submitted to the original article)
ENEMY BROTHERS, by Constance Savery
THE REB AND THE REDCOAT, also by Constance Savery (it has a little bit at the end about "what happened years later" that would make a great springboard for another book)
THE BORROWED HOUSE, by Hilda Van Stockum
CAMPION TOWERS, by John and Patricia Beatty

What these all have in common are characters that are interesting and stories that leave interesting possibilities for future events, even though they are complete in themselves. And while certainly I can imagine for myself what might happen next, I'd really rather have the author write it so I can savor the writing.

The Queen's Thief books are some of my absolute favorite books and I was frantically browsing this community trying to find out if CoK was the last book. I saw someone mention that MWT had two more in the series and I was just wondering....

How do we know?!? I would LOVE two(or ten? lol) more books, but I need proof so I don't get my hopes up only to have them dashed. Haha. I can't find anything, and I feel like I've looked everywhere! Can anybody help me out? :D

I was just reading MWT's official website, and I found this bit about what she says about in which order to read the books:

On the other hand, I think The Thief spoils The King of Attolia. So there are pluses and minuses to any order you choose.

Anyone agree with her? And why? Because I can't think of any reason why The Thief could possibly spoil The King of Attolia. (Or is she just joking around?)

This has been an awful week out of a terrible year, but for a few hours A Conspiracy of Kings lifted me out of it, transported me elsewhere and lightened my burdens. Thank you.

I await the next book with excitement and extreme trepidation (you've turned me into an extremely careful and aware reader, so yeah, I'm both hopeful and scared out of my mind about what's to come).

Hello all! I am currently deeply and contentedly enmeshed in a rather arduous research adventure through the annals of the sounis community. I am attempting to create a history of the term "Queen's Thief" as a designation for the series. I plan on submitting the history to Greenwillow, and through them to Ms. Turner, for their consideration. You might consider this my plea to get them to make the name official. :)

Hi everyone!

Let me briefly introduce myself. I have lurked here for a long time now. I forget how long. I've posted a comment once or twice, but mostly have lurked. I found this series by what I like to think of as magic - I found The Thief laying around my house one day and no one knew where it came from. I was bored on day and read it, and then read it again. These are now my favorite books ever. I am so glad there is a whole community of people who feel the same.

Now, onto what's really important. I'm sure several of you at least have spotted this already, but Greenwillow is holding a contest to come up with a name for the series! And mwt's top ten favorite's are going to win signed galleys of ACoK. You can get the details here on the facebook page. Can you say BEST CONTEST EVER?!

I mentioned the name the Queen's Thief right away because that's what I call it now, but I realized that there is absolutely no way that I can claim that - that the honor must belong to one of you, so I also posted something to that effect. I hope I haven't offended anyone.

     Hmm... Two posts in a row. I am quite talkative today.

     I did a little web searching after the title, A Conspiracy of Kings, was announced; and I found something exciting.

     The Canadian Amazon site has a specific date listed.
