Congrats Sophos and Helen!
Jun. 15th, 2007 01:01 amSneaky. I know, I know, I KNOW the contest is finished, etc, etc., the pregnant chads in Florida are just being recounted, no more entries.
But I have decided to "do a Gen" and do the sneaky thing, because....well, I can't help it. It all started at a comment someone posted on "vote for Sophos" (anonymous unfortunately) requesting mentintal3 to make a sequel to that lovely art of Sophos's Reappearance (and subsequent proposal.)
Well, that started all sorts of unwelcome (after all, I'm supposed to be at work, doing laundry, getting sleep, etc etc) thoughts bouncing around my head. Suddenly all I could think of was WHAT THE WEDDING WOULD LOOK LIKE.
And so, with groveling apologies to mentintal and the long-suffering anachred, I hereby warn you all to STAY AWAY and not contaminate your mind, too, lest you are unable to work and stay up late sketching madly.
After all, Gen-itis and Sophos' blush is contagious.
PS> I wanted to add in the wedding guests (Gen? In long sleeved tunic? Irene in one of those sublime peplos dresses? the MoW? Stenides, in a cummerbund and carnation?) but no time. Gen-itis is a dangerous and urgent disease.

Date: 6/15/07 05:12 am (UTC)I was going to post yesterday that I LOVED the angle of your Sophos's whole position - especially his foreshortened elbows - but it just sounded so strange " hey! Your elbows are divine!" so I just clammed up. You professionally trained or just an extremely talented hobbyist? the shading was awesome, too. :-)

Date: 6/15/07 05:32 am (UTC)Thanks so much! I was impressed myself at how the elbows turned out...but while we're making confessions, I actually was lucky enough to find a stock photo close enough to what I wanted to have a decent reference XD As long as I have a reference, I don't have much trouble, so it sort of feels like cheating ^^;;
I'm...sort of both? I've been drawing since a very young age, and I'm now almost done with getting my Fine Arts degree =D So yeah =) What about you?

Date: 6/15/07 05:55 am (UTC)Yeah, I've been drawing and confounding my teachers with doodled notes for forever, and I'm dreaming of art school. Currently I'm a graphic designer (thus the PS) working full time and trying to get a job illustrating instead of designing :-)
I'd really, really love to go to Joe Kubert, but it's a full-time college and I'd have to dump my job (which took eons to get.)So I guess I'm back to sketching for sounis LOL.
How long did the Sophos drawing take? Just so I can be jealous :D
no subject
Date: 6/15/07 06:02 am (UTC)Honestly, Sophos took about and hour and a half? but I was talking on messenger a LOT, so there's no telling XD;

Date: 6/15/07 07:00 am (UTC)it's interesting that you say you love illustrating to much too do it as a job! to tell the truth, i'm a little afraid of that, too. But if I do illustrate as a job, then I'll get constant practice. And get better. Right? Huh.
Go designers! Yeah. we rock. Now all the world really needs is clients that will let the designers do what they do best and just pay for it instead of micromanaging *sigh*. (the Big Question: you going for QuarkXPress or InDesign? The Great Debate. If you can, learn both. It will save you hours of pain. Trust me.)
Joe Kubert is the foremost US school of cartooning - it's pretty cool. Isn't the Art Institute of Chicago where Joe Corroney gives this great class? I could be totally mistaken, though. You are so lucky to be in art school, period. Do you find it rewarding, or is it alot of 'soft classes' with a couple of really core classes?
*sigh again* You have any fave artists you like to imitate? Timewise...yeah. People never realize how long stuff takes. You stop for oreos and phone and email, sure, but the work still takes ages. I imagine Michaelangelo didn't have much of a social life.
no subject
Date: 6/15/07 07:27 am (UTC)Dude, NONE of the classes I've taken are soft. They are Hardcore and Asskicking, and the professors will put your ass through the wringer. They weed out a lot of hippies XDD Our school has a ridiculously good art program, even tougher if you go for the professional degree. They own your soul for five years, and the classes are small so it's on a fairly personal level...so when you see the things they've accomplished in their work and how hard they are, it really makes you push yourself. And it's so rewarding when they acknowledge that effort. *stops gushing*
Dude, I think Michaelangelo didn't have a social life for personal reasons XD He sounds grumpy.
I LOVE Alphonse Mucha. Gosh. His stuff is so clean and bold and delicate at the same time. And I've been spending a lot of time on DeviantArt and looking at different styles there; I'm a big fan of the drawing in pen XD Arthur Rackham is another one; he's got really dark fairytale imagery that I like. I know there's lots of others I will think of as soon as I go to sleep XD;; What about you? Who do you like?

I'm kidding. I love it. They both look so happy.
Y'know, it would be really twisted if Sophos ended up dead before he could marry Eddis. It's like, mwt is encouraging us to draw these but....yeah

Date: 6/15/07 01:44 pm (UTC)Alphonse mucha **googling** WHOA! This guy is AMAZING. and Arthur Rackham....! Whew. gotta check these guys out seriously. I love seeing great art. Oh, I adore Norman Rockwell. And Simone Biancchi. Doug Wheatley does some serious mind-blowing stuff, and, so sue me, I just love the force of movement in Damien Scott's stuff. John Cassaday's delicacy of ink is really interesting - the type of thing you notice when you copy his work for practice. Like, this guy draws every bristle on an unshaved face. whew. I liked Alex Ross's stuff for a while, but I think it has a "stamp". Like, his style doesn't explore much. WHich I'm not sure is a bad thing. But whatever.
Hergé's classic Tintin inspired me to draw when I was a kid, so he always had a huge place in my heart. The supposed simplicity of his stuff is only that - supposed. Lucas Marragnon can reduce a drawing to a few brilliant lines, David Fabbri is also really clean with a slight goofiness and his color washes are lovely. (Even if his arms are usually a tad too long.) But my favorite is the eyeballs he draws. Oh. that came out weird. Karl Kerschl can draw the best lounging teenager elbows askew around. Tom Nguyen has this really interesting style - clean but robust. take a look at his teeth or grin and you'll see what I mean **feels like frankenstein, dissecting artistry by body limb** Gadi Pollack is amazing, all around.
**looks at list above and stops gushing**

Date: 6/15/07 03:43 pm (UTC)Same here (even though I'm crap at drawing!) but I do still love the books. It always amazed me how much detail went into them!

Date: 6/15/07 03:45 pm (UTC)Do you mainly do sketches or do you do paintings and other things as well?
no subject
Date: 6/15/07 04:02 pm (UTC)Thus the blushing.
even if he does have fabricalchemist's ab situation going on! :D
I love sketching, cartooning, portraits - and I'd love to spend more time colorizing and painting. Painting is not my forte. (there's no eraser.) If I do paint, it's watercolors, which are ALOT more than those pathetic little circles you dabbled with at three years old to make those watery and depressing mushes. I do loads of design (it's my job) and some animation, too, but pencils, ink, and erasers RULE!

Date: 6/15/07 04:12 pm (UTC)Also, scottykarrde, between your last picture and this I am absolutely enamoured with and jealous of your skill. <3

Date: 6/15/07 04:18 pm (UTC)Yeah, it's awesome to speak with others in the same sitch. I don't have any friends who illustrate, too, and it's kinda lonely. Everything you do, you second - guess, like, "well, I think this is awesome but - but - the arm gotta be too long, and I bet it's really not as good as I think it is, and -" because moms are biased and so you tweak it til its either ruined or you're sick of it.
So hearing this is greeeat! What are you looking for, job-wise? Illustration or design? do you think that having an illustrative background enhances your design skills?
Be ready for a bit of a rough start. Don't worry. Stick with it, and you'll get the hang. It's like playing the piano - it's misery at first but one day you suddenly can play and it's magic!

Date: 6/15/07 04:28 pm (UTC)oooh, cool. lol to the watercolours. I love using those watercolour pencils because they blend so damn well and there's less risk of turning it into a depressing mush.
Though I do way more jewellery making and textiles stuff.

Date: 6/15/07 05:28 pm (UTC)hehe. I want to make dolls of Eddis and Sophos in their wedding clothes now like one heck of a plea to mwt. you can't not have them together but she's gonna put plot twists in and so amazing and unpredictable ones...

Date: 6/15/07 05:40 pm (UTC)Not that good at drawing? Uhh....*points to all your votes* XD and since when does the lack of approval from one's parents stop artists? I thought that was a crucial element.

Date: 6/15/07 05:49 pm (UTC)haha. I can't draw 3D! I'm hopeless at drawing people! And took me years to do huge paintings. It's because I obsess with little details and have gotta learn to step back and look at it as a whole. And my art teacher had this thing about making us paint skulls too. Slightly morbid. She had these sheep skulls she'd obsess about.
LOL. I do mostly textile art now but after monday it's a 3 month summer for me and who knows I might try some other stuff again....

Date: 6/15/07 05:55 pm (UTC)Now I want to make that necklance. But I'd never wear it...so DX HOW did you recreate it? What did you use?
I can sympathize with the detail-obsessing. I'm just starting to let go of that and go for 'controlled messy' which is killing meeeeeeee but it looks so good XD; And skulls? Creepy. My art professor went through a phase where he only painted bones, but it was more a study on the values. Also, he is color blind and the top art professor: hardcore, yo.
Do you do any costuming, like cosplay? Or make clothes?

Date: 6/15/07 06:07 pm (UTC)And I painted a million little butterflies too. Gah. I'll do an LJ post because otherwise I'll end up spamming ScottyKarrade's post!
Yeah, she actually told us to go looking for bones. Sheep is making me think of Gen and Ornon. (nooo, *hits brain*)
I've made costumes before but I'm not very good at it. My old school was an Arts School and we had a theatre build my last 2 years there and I helped out. So much fun!
I am planning to make way more clothes this summer! I tend to make bags because they're smaller and easier for presents.
And controlled messy looks awesome!

Date: 6/15/07 06:18 pm (UTC)Also, have you heard of Jamie Hewlett? He does the artwork for Gorillaz, and his stuff just looks really...dirty. I dunno, it's bold lines and kind of a middle finger to things that are overworked XD omfg and BANKSY. I love Banksy; I adore his artistic mission statement.
no subject
Date: 6/15/07 07:33 pm (UTC)I don't know about illustration enhancing my design, but knowing the essentials of design is absolutely essential to my illustration! Drawing skill is all well and good but if you've got a nice drawing in a poor composition it's going to drag it down just as badly.
And oh, with the second guessing~ x.x I'm lucky enough to have artistically inclined friends who honestly tell me if something looks wonky. But there are also times when I think something's atrocious yet everyone I know adores it; that *really* makes me question myself. I can always pick out what's bad about a drawing, but looking for the good is a whole other story. XD;

Date: 6/15/07 07:49 pm (UTC)Re: freelancing. It's hard. I just turned down a job today that I had really wanted last year - the guy got someone internationally to do it for cheaper (where dollars are worth more.) I felt like it wouldn't be worth my while, but it still hurt. So often you need to take a hit financially to get anywhere artistically, you know?

Date: 6/15/07 07:54 pm (UTC)OMG chemical you are expanding horizons here.
Hewlett is wild in a Paul Pope kind of way but much better held together. (I don't like Pope's style but you gotta admit his art has verve in its blood.)
And banksy! shooo. I like his website btw. Totally wild! Like reinterpreting your surroundings. I like.

Date: 6/15/07 09:21 pm (UTC)Well, I am just crossing my fingers that if I plod along patiently enough, I will eventually get somewhere financially *and* artistically that I'm happy with. XD; That's the hope, anyway. But aye, you've got to deal with a lot on the way. That is unfortunate about the job, but at least you were willing to stick up for what you're worth. =3

Nyah. got to think a bit here. definitely not Court Floor Sweeper or Dish washer, I do that too much in real life
