He was supposed to die, actually, there's a whole line where he said that only the power of the gods could have kept him alive, but at the same time his living was an offense to them... I could find the quote but I'm too lazy. I like the idea of the Magus having taken it, and Gen not having given it to him, and that's why it worked for him... cool idea!
