I think the "something" was the intimacy at the end of QofA. The part where she wants to remain sovereign and use his fear of her against him was right after they'd danced and he'd teased her. I felt the dynamic changed when she thought he had died (again) and realized/confessed that she loved him...and him saying that she was his queen. She's much better at taking his teasing, even enjoying it and teasing him back, by KofA. Maybe the intriguing discussions on the wedding night helped too...but that also shows they were communicating about important decisions as early as then--and that even if he didn't want to exert his power as king he was thinking about socio-political things that would affect their rule anyway.
