Interesting blog post by Black Gate on Story Openings.  She discusses what makes a great YA story opening, why it has different requirements from adult fiction, and holds up The Thief and Howl's Moving Castle as two of the examples on How To Do It Well.

Interesting, and great point about children's books needing to get off to a quicker start, in general, than adult books. It reminds me a little of what adalanne had to say in this (http://community.livejournal.com/sounis/216277.html?thread=4901077#t4901077) thread a few weeks ago.

That was very interesting. And so true! When I read LOTR I just skipped the first hundred or so pages and got right down to the "Oh, it's really an evil ring, is it?" part of the story.
