Type of Warrior?
Apr. 29th, 2009 07:18 am I was recently watching Spike TV, and they an ad for the deadliest warrior series. I saw the spartan and the ninja. I immediately thought of the spartan as the Attolian soldiers, and the ninja as Eugenides. I can't imagine the Attolians with the ridiculous head piece, but you never know?! I've people talk about Gen's "awesome ninja skillz", and thought of that. There were other ads for this shows with different warriors, and I was wondering what warrior category the Eddians would fall under. Just keep in mind this quote,
"She had tried to explain the Eddians once to Nahuseresh. He'd pressed her to commit her army to taking the pass up to Eddis, thinking that once they were passed the danger of the cannon overlooking the gorge, they could easily sweep through the wall to the top of the pass and win the mountain valleys. She'd refused, doubting that her army would succeed in fighting its way past the cannon without being eviscerated. Nahuseresh had attributed her reluctance to an entirely understandable female timidity. He didn't seem to understand that the people of Eddis had very little to do all winter beyond develop superior artisan skills and train for war."'-page260-261 QoA

Date: 4/29/09 11:00 pm (UTC)More surprising for me was the Pirate win, because they wear absolutely NO ARMOR, whereas Knights are more or less made of steel. In the end the Pirate won because of the gun, and I actually think it's kind of a cool idea since we know (from QoA) that Attolian guards have guns. So they're kind of like a combination of Spartans and Pirates?

Date: 4/29/09 11:10 pm (UTC)That's actually a cliche.
Sparta was a military state and children still in their signal digit years under went vigourous training for battle. Women were also trained but not because they fought in war, but because it was belived they would bear better warrior sons. A person's value was baset entirely upon their ability to fight. Spartans lived for war.
Ninja, on the other hand, ran a business, and their purposes can be deprived from the meaning of the word (nin=silent, ja=person). They were agents for hire that carried out assassination missions and other shady deals those of power didn't want the public knowing about. They lived in secret villages called shinobi, and entire families were trained in the arts of stealth. Consequentially, ninja weren't taught how to engage in long drawn out battles. They were trained to fight with small easily concealed weapons, and to take out or incapacitate their enemy then get out of danger.
Notice this quote...
"Phokis could break him in half with one hand."
"If Phokis could lay one hand on him."
P385 of "The King of Attolia"
Spartans were taught to endure battles that could last for days wearing heavy armor and using large weapons. So these results really don't surprise me.
BTW, Ballet2nite this is a very amusing post. I liked it, and I apologize for my rambling. I can't help myself.

Date: 4/29/09 11:50 pm (UTC)Knights fought mounted, and were supported by light-armored foot-solders and archers. The worst thing that could happen to a knight was getting knocked off of his horse, for then he was SOL. Full armor with chain-mail weighed over one-hundred pounds, and their were many small holes in the armor that a close range warrior not weighed down could stab through killing the knight.
Pirates with their short cutlasses and one-shot pistols would certainly have the advantage in close range, one-on-one combat.

I was thinking of a Spartan foot solider that dosen't wear a lot of weight on his arms and legs. So his movements wouldn't be clumsy and predictiable.
Also, Spartan helms didn't impare vision like the helms of knights did. That's why I think a fight between an ninja and a knight would be comical. The ninja could just keep darting into the knight's blind-spot. (I could see Gen doing this.)
I was also thinking that the ninja would be smaller (I assume we are talking about a Japanese ninja.), and wouldn't have much to defend himself with if he just had throwing daggers and a short katana. If he had a pair of sai though he would be able to deflect blows from a larger weapon. That's if the ninja actually stuck around to fight. Most ninja would just run away.
BTW, the_last_Eddis, and I were talking about starting a comm dedicated to historical discussion and debate with Soji's_blackcat and TA in a month or two. Would you be interested in such a comm?
