New Book Etiquette

Well everyone, exciting times are upon us! I had no idea that a new book was so soon in coming, and I'm totally thrilled. I'm sure everyone else here appreciates that sentiment. :)

There's one thing I'd like to ask the community as a whole as the release date for Conspiracy of Kings draws nearer.

Please, please, please ***USE SPOILER ALERTS AND LJ-CUT YOUR NEW BOOK DISCUSSIONS.***
I'm not caps-locking to yell, just to draw attention in case you only read one line of this post. :)

For some people, such as myself, knowing anything about a story in advance can really spoil the experience. In addition, please err on the side of caution when deciding what to warn for as a spoiler. Believe it or not, I would rather have no info about the books other than the title and release date. I don't even want to know how many pages there are or who the dedication is to. As little info as possible, really. I'm the kind of person who closes her eyes, covers her ears, and hums during the "Next On..." previews as the end of each TV episode. :D

I'm begging you all to be careful and considerate, which I know everyone is. If you need information on how to lj-cut I'd be happy to link you to something. Thanks so much!

Excellent points, danny. Luckily, the LJ cut will make it easy for everyone to hide any kind of reference to descriptions or spoilers.

Making a cut is easy if you do your post in rich text editor. The help topic is here:

Question: Would it be ok for me to make icons of the new cover and use/share them? I just thought I'd ask before I do because, trust me, I know how things like that can blow up. Well, not so much with one image from a cover, but I went through the whole crazy spoiler thing during the last season of Avatar when trailers and episodes and all kinds of stuff was leaking and NO ONE cared at all for any one else's preference to remain unspoiled.

By the way, do we have a tag for this new book?

That would make it easier for people who don't want to be spoiled to come back and read the posts later, among other things.

Personally, I feel like cover art is fair game for icons or whatever. My reasoning is that I'm going to see the cover before I read the book anyway. It's a bit annoying, because sometimes the publishers put spoilers in the cover or description, Ender's Game being a perfect example. Since we can't really do anything about that though, I'd say go for it. :)

Excellent point, since I also hate spoilers. Sounis was pretty well behaved for KoA though, I don't think there'll be much of a problem but it's good to remind people. =)
