I assumed it would be something like leprosy, simply because of the parallels to the King of Crete in the Theseus myth.
Of course, you can't draw a literal parallel between the Medes and the Cretians (sp?), because Eddis's volcano has similarities to the end of Crete too. I guess the influences are scattered here and there...
