I also found out that Tethys is the name of an ancient sea, which survives today as the Mediterranean. The setting of the Thief books is similar to Greece, so could the disease name derive from the name of a nearby sea?
I have to say, I don't think that Tethys Sea was mentioned anywhere in the books.
