Date: 5/29/06 01:45 pm (UTC)It's interesting that all three mention MWT in context with YA novels. I think Patricia Wrede makes a good point about the tone of the book. The Queen of Attolia particularly deals with issues which could potentially be quite disturbing, but I think MWT manages to keep them poignant without going over the top.
:) I know others have disagreed though.

MWT said a character was an influence on Eugenides, and I think it is Donal, the main character of this book, although there are dozens of books in the series (Childe Cycle). It is excellent SciFi, very well written and action packed. Donal is a master at subterfuge, indirection and foolhardy plans. It's the first book in the series.
