About four of us turned up, and I kept wandering off to try and make my camera work, so ignore the odd disappearance. :)

checkers: so much of his power was in his hand, so he used to think
anon8: he goes to prove himself more capable with 1 hand than most people are with 2
checkers: but he really had to change how he thought about himself
anon8: but he keeps his humor, much of his personality...he's forced to mature but it's not in a bad way
checkers: true, but it took time. really, in each book Gen has to reinvent himself and change
anon8: plus there was that whole thing about a thief's greatest asset is his mind

checkers: Costis was able to defend himself a bit at the end as long as Gen did the same attack he was used to doing.

checkers: true. Gen could have completely humiliated Costis with the swords, but left him with a bit of dignity
anon8: yes, and also showing he didn't hold it against Costis for trying to force him into the open
anon8: maybe testing if Costis finally learned something, too
anon8: and illustrating, instead of explaining, why they did all those boring exercises
anon8: i'm thinking repetition must be part of the training in Eddis
checkers: Costis didn't seem to think he'd gotten much better, but it was his won fault for not using the time to reallt work and improve

checkers: true. Gen could have completely humiliated Costis with the swords, but left him with a bit of dignity
anon8: yes, and also showing he didn't hold it against Costis for trying to force him into the open
anon8: maybe testing if Costis finally learned something, too
anon8: and illustrating, instead of explaining, why they did all those boring exercises
anon8: i'm thinking repetition must be part of the training in Eddis
checkers: Costis didn't seem to think he'd gotten much better, but it was his won fault for not using the time to reallt work and improve

Rowana: I think Costis just didn't think he'd improved as much as he could have, from Gen. He must have improved at least a little. :)
