Sophos, revisited
Jun. 23rd, 2006 09:02 pmI know we've discussed this before, but I was rereading a bit and wondered about the future of Sophos, the missing heir. I think he's going to return in future books. Here's why.
KoA never SAYS that Sophos has been kidnapped by the rebels. On page 118 it says he PROBABLY was abducted. On page 299, Ornon says if the rebels had Sophos alive, they would have said so by now. On page 318, the magus tells Eddis that they don't know that Sophos is gone. And, finally, page 331 says there was still no word of Sophos.
And there are reassuring hints from The Thief.
When Gen is watching Ambiades and Sophos practice with wooden swords, he says that Sophos shows some talent and coordination, and that with a good instructor he'd be a dangerous opponent. And Sophos is scholarly and always wants to learn more.
Do you think Sophos might have had a good fencing instructor after Pol died? If he is still alive, why has he remained hidden? Could his knowledge of tree classification and identifying mountain ranges ensure his survival? Is there hope for the heir of Sounis, and for Helen's happiness? *melodrama/angst*

Sophos
Date: 6/24/06 09:38 am (UTC)Sophos as a fencing instructor is an interesting idea. In QoA, we knew that he was on the island of Letnos (I think that was what it's called) being kept away from the Magus. Presumably he'd still have had instructors and so on, so I guess it's possible. I think it depends on what long term effect Pol's death had on him in 'The Thief'.
I still think if he does return, it'll be after having been captured by the 'rebels'. Speaking of which, who are these mysterious rebels? We never got a hint of them in QoA. Then again, the only possible reference to the political situation in Sounis came when Gen decided not to slit Sounis' throat, because Sophos, he said, was not ready to inherit.
Oh, another thought. I guess these rebels leave a possible opening for the Mede to get involved.
If Sophos were living innocently hidden somewhere, why wouldn't he show himself after rumors that he'd been kidnapped began to circulate. We don't know how strong his sense of duty is too, so I guess we can't speculate on whether he'd keep himself hidden whilst the country fell down around him.

Whoever the rebels are, it seems like whatever Gen didn't want to happen with Sounis' death (civil war) happened anyway. He should have killed the jerk. :)
I'm still waiting for 'Barrayar' from the library.
Dang! And after that you HAVE to read Warrior's Apprentice. You made me want to reread. :)

Oh. My. God. That would be SO angsty and horrifying. But what a plot mechanism! I think I like it...
As long as assassination could be in Sounis' future.
