Poked by my children, I've been reading the Harry Dresden (http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden/) books by Jim Butcher, although I am taking a brief hiatus from Harry's adventures to read the Tomorrow novel series by John Marsden.
eta: the Dresden books are probably not ones I would recommend for kids in Middle School or younger
