Of course you can gather someone up in your arms and carry them when they are 17-18 years old. I imagine Eugenides at this point is on the small side for an adult man, not his full size, but surely no longer a child, probably like 120-125 lbs. and I imagine his father to be a big, tall strapping, strong soldier of a man. It's a beautiful scene....
