Gen Screenshot?
Aug. 27th, 2011 03:11 pmSo... I was contemplating whether to post this or not, but I was having a kick out of it. Recently in DA, I saw a "fake screenshot" tutorial, and so many artists were doing them already. So I figure, hey, why not, and tried it too.
Ta dah!!!

Well, haha, it's a little shabby, but it was a quick one. I must say The Thief isn't my favourite book in the series, but when I was browsing for a good scene to practice on, I saw this one, and thought it would be cool. I actually wasn't very fond of Magus in the first book. I thought he was mean as heck, and felt like slapping him a couple of times, this scene included.
On another note, I noticed that MWT is a big fan of Rosemary Sutcliff, and she has recommended books by her in ACoK. I haven't read a book by her yet, but I've heard that a few of you have read "Eagle of the Ninth" and liked it. When I looked it up in the library, I'm not sure if I was interested in the story though. But there's a movie based on it. Should I see the movie first or give the book a try? (Apparently, there's BL in it! Mwahahaha!)

Date: 8/27/11 09:37 pm (UTC)Need more...Also, as a huge Rosemary Sutcliff fan myself, I say you can't go wrong with the book version of Eagle of the Ninth. It's not a thriller, per say, but it'll immerse you in the atmosphere of early Britain.

Date: 8/27/11 11:48 pm (UTC)The book is great. A bit slow at first, but it was written over 50 years ago. The core of the story is the friendship between Esca and Marcus. I really enjoyed it.

Date: 8/28/11 12:10 am (UTC)It's strange actually, because I don't watch anime. ^^ I'm just very fond of the semi-manga, semi-realistic style.
Yes, I shall join your fantasizing! I'm thinking ACoK... Berrone and her mother scene...
Or even better! Gen's proposal scene on the boat! *sigh*

Date: 8/28/11 12:13 am (UTC)Ah, alright. Then maybe I'll pick it up. I saw "Mark of the Horse Lord" and borrowed it. I just finished the first chapter, and find it very good so far. So here's me hoping (with crossed fingers and all) that I would like it. Not just like it, but *really* like it.
Thanks for the insight! I was hoping for one. =)

Re: The Eagle (of the Ninth) - book vs. movie
Date: 8/28/11 12:17 am (UTC)Ah, I dislike it a lot when movies change plot lines. It's disappointing.
Funny you say "friendship" between Esca and Marcus. Looking at fanworks in DA, it seemed more like the fangirls were rooting for some... erm, Roman-Briton action. Haha, so I was confused, and thus turned to Sounis for some insight. I don't exactly want to go to Amazon or Wikipedia, because they can be a bit spoilery.
Re: The Eagle (of the Ninth) - book vs. movie
Date: 8/28/11 04:36 am (UTC)I do very much like Eagle but my favorite Sutcliff I've read is The Shield Ring. Our library doesn't have Mark of the Horse Lord but I've always wanted to read it.
Great screen shot btw. Doesn't look at all shabby to me. I love Gen's expression.
Re: The Eagle (of the Ninth) - book vs. movie
Date: 8/28/11 01:59 pm (UTC)My library actually has a pretty good collection on Sutcliff. I'll see if I can find "The Shield Ring" there. Once I finish "Mark of the Horse Lord", I'll tell you if I liked it. ^__^
Aw, thanks! Hehe, I imagined Gen would look really offended. =)

Date: 8/28/11 02:13 pm (UTC)I read The Eagle of the Ninth and saw the movie but I definitly thought the movie was really gory and stuff and they took a lot out of the book.
The book tends to be a little slow though...
But I thought both of them were good.

Date: 8/28/11 05:18 pm (UTC)Mark of the Horselord is possibly my absolute favourite Sutcliff! (Well, one of them.) :D And... MWT references that one in KoA. So I hope you enjoy it.

Date: 8/28/11 06:08 pm (UTC)I'm not a fan of historical fiction, but I loved Eagle of the Ninth. Mark of the Horse Lord was good, too.
I like the screen shot, especially Gen's darling little braid!

Date: 8/28/11 10:14 pm (UTC)I read Eagle of the Ninth and the only charachter I liked was the dog! I'm not much of a fan of historical fiction, so that might have had something to do with it. I don't know if any of her other books are better.

Date: 8/28/11 11:09 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm not a fan of historical fiction either, and I'm already seeing how my lack of interest or knowledge of it is affecting my reading of "Mark of the Horse Lord". While the main story line's easy to pick up, all the other subplots happening is confusing. Not to mention, I can barely read European names.
Heehee, thanks a lot! Yeah, one can never forget the braid. That's why I haven't done any Gen fanarts beyond TT. I miss the braid. =)

Date: 8/28/11 11:11 pm (UTC)Oh really? I keep seeing cute little fanarts of the dog too.
Yeah, I don't like to read historical fiction either, but I figured I should try something new from time to time. =) I'll see if I like it after I read a couple of her her books.

Date: 8/29/11 11:52 pm (UTC)You might be interested in Rosemary Sutcliff's autobiography, 'Blue Remembered Hills.' She was a very skilled painter of miniatures, as well as being a writer. I love her books very much: her worldbuilding is superb, and her characters are very human. I find most Historicals silly (too often the mores and the slang are modern) but Miss Sutcliff (and Ellis Peters, whose 'Cadfael' mediaeval mysteries are good) rise above that!

Date: 8/30/11 10:38 pm (UTC)Yeah, I read a bit about her from About the Author in one of her books. ^^ Hehe, yes apparently she was a painter too. That's very cool. And yes, I agree that her world-building is very powerful and effective; that's one of the first things I noticed when I first started reading "Mark of the Horse Lord". ^^ But I have to admit, the premise of the story isn't really enough to keep me hooked. I feel more sympathy for some of the minor characters, than I do for Phaedrus as well.
I haven't read many historical novels a lot, but it seems that I might have to this year (b/c I'm taking an English course, yay!!), so I'll see if I'll feel more optimistic about the genre.

Date: 8/31/11 06:44 pm (UTC)And I thought I it was QoA that had referenced to it though; the "two inches in the right place" part, but perhaps that was just a coincidence with the wording.

Date: 8/31/11 08:25 pm (UTC)MotHL is one of the books that epitomizes Robin McKinley's quote about books that walk softly toward "an entirely earned and inevitable appalling conclusion" for me. Because usually, if it doesn't end happily for the majority of those concerned, I am not a happy reader.

Date: 9/1/11 01:16 am (UTC)I liked his wife, and he had to leave her with a babe all by herself. Actually, I was really more interested in Conory than anyone else. He and his cat are the dynamic duo in this book. Midir too, and I was very disappointed to find out he doesn't really participate that much at all. Phaedrus... yeah, not much to say about him and his insolent smile. ^__~

Date: 9/1/11 01:21 am (UTC)(Sadly, I can't seem to get into McKinley books.) But as for MotHL, I was all hyped up, seeing Midir and Liadhan, but the actual taking down of the bad guy took two sentences, after all those chapters! The next thing I know, the character I have put up with all this time fell off the pages. -__-
Yeah, for me too, rarely have I ever liked a book that did not end happily.
And I have started EotN by the way! It's really good. MUCH better than MotHL, I say. Marcus is a lovely, lovely character.

Date: 9/4/11 05:35 pm (UTC)I prefer McKinley's earlier works to her more recent ones. The summaries and reviews have failed to excite me. I'm getting the idea that we have different tastes in books. ^^ Is there an author you particularly like? :-)
Yay for liking EotN! Will you go on to read The Silver Branch? I can't quite remember if it's about Marcus' son, or grandson...

Date: 9/5/11 12:01 am (UTC)Perhaps we do. ^^ I'm more into fairy tale esque books. I really like Shannon Hale's works; she was my favourite author before I found out about MWT. Usually though, the books I read aren't based on who wrote them. I mean, I love "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Conrad's Fate", but there are books by DWJ that didn't excite me much.
Yeah!! I finished it now! I even watched the movie. Since I was forewarned, I didn't expect much of it, but I found that it wasn't too bad. There were imperfections though, and I hate that the dynamics between Esca and Marcus changed, but it wasn't so bad. ^^ Er, I don't think I'll read "The Silver Branch". Yeah it's about Marcus's descendant... but for now I like the idea of Marcus and Esca marching off into a farm, and leave it at that. ^__^
