So... I was contemplating whether to post this or not, but I was having a kick out of it. Recently in DA, I saw a "fake screenshot" tutorial, and so many artists were doing them already. So I figure, hey, why not, and tried it too.

Ta dah!!!

Well, haha, it's a little shabby, but it was a quick one. I must say The Thief isn't my favourite book in the series, but when I was browsing for a good scene to practice on, I saw this one, and thought it would be cool.  I actually wasn't very fond of Magus in the first book. I thought he was mean as heck, and felt like slapping him a couple of times, this scene included.

On another note, I noticed that MWT is a big fan of Rosemary Sutcliff, and she has recommended books by her in ACoK. I haven't read a book by her yet, but I've heard that a few of you have read "Eagle of the Ninth" and liked it. When I looked it up in the library, I'm not sure if I was interested in the story though. But there's a movie based on it. Should I see the movie first or give the book a try? (Apparently, there's BL in it! Mwahahaha!)

Oww... Shiny fake screen shot! It's actually very real looking. Keh... Now I can spend the rest of the day fantasizing about TT as an anime. Thanks!

Very nice! Gen looks furious! Need more...

Also, as a huge Rosemary Sutcliff fan myself, I say you can't go wrong with the book version of Eagle of the Ninth. It's not a thriller, per say, but it'll immerse you in the atmosphere of early Britain.

Wow, that is beautiful!!! I really, really want to watch "the rest" of it now.

The Eagle (of the Ninth) - book vs. movie

I watched "The Eagle" a few weeks ago. It was awful. It was *way* more violent than the book and way more violent than necessary. Plus they changed significant points in the story. I was so disappointed because I love the book and was really hoping the movie would be good. The book isn't without violence, but it isn't graphic. The movie was very graphic and over-the-top violent. My husband said it felt like a movie that was filmed to be unrated (there is an unrated version of it) and then poorly edited to be pg-13.

The book is great. A bit slow at first, but it was written over 50 years ago. The core of the story is the friendship between Esca and Marcus. I really enjoyed it.

I have seen references to the Roman-Briton action hopes too and was honestly perplexed because I did not get any of those vibes while reading the book at all. I actually liked it because I thought it was a great depiction of true loyalty and honor between friends. Nothing else. But maybe I'm just clueless?

I do very much like Eagle but my favorite Sutcliff I've read is The Shield Ring. Our library doesn't have Mark of the Horse Lord but I've always wanted to read it.

Great screen shot btw. Doesn't look at all shabby to me. I love Gen's expression.

I love the "screenshot" now I want to see the movie!
I read The Eagle of the Ninth and saw the movie but I definitly thought the movie was really gory and stuff and they took a lot out of the book.
The book tends to be a little slow though...
But I thought both of them were good.

All things considered, Gen handled that scene very well.

Mark of the Horselord is possibly my absolute favourite Sutcliff! (Well, one of them.) :D And... MWT references that one in KoA. So I hope you enjoy it.

I agree with everyone about the movie. I apparently rented the unrated version of the DVD and there was way more violence than I like to watch. Plus, parts of it seemed really cheesy to me. Channing Tatum and Jamies Bell, however, were lovely to watch and looked exactly like I had imagined them when I read the book.

I'm not a fan of historical fiction, but I loved Eagle of the Ninth. Mark of the Horse Lord was good, too.

I like the screen shot, especially Gen's darling little braid!

Very cute, you captured Gen's expression perfectly!!

I read Eagle of the Ninth and the only charachter I liked was the dog! I'm not much of a fan of historical fiction, so that might have had something to do with it. I don't know if any of her other books are better.

Oh by the way, you should totally put this on DA.

I love the expression on his face! Excellent!!

You might be interested in Rosemary Sutcliff's autobiography, 'Blue Remembered Hills.' She was a very skilled painter of miniatures, as well as being a writer. I love her books very much: her worldbuilding is superb, and her characters are very human. I find most Historicals silly (too often the mores and the slang are modern) but Miss Sutcliff (and Ellis Peters, whose 'Cadfael' mediaeval mysteries are good) rise above that!

I think you found it!

MotHL is one of the books that epitomizes Robin McKinley's quote about books that walk softly toward "an entirely earned and inevitable appalling conclusion" for me. Because usually, if it doesn't end happily for the majority of those concerned, I am not a happy reader.

Good luck with your English course! I always think of Historicals as a sub-genre of Fantasy - and I agree with you about Phaedrus, he is a twit, but the minor characters (especially his wife) are much more attractive!

The first time I read KoA I had to stop right there because they were so similar and there was so. much. glee.

I prefer McKinley's earlier works to her more recent ones. The summaries and reviews have failed to excite me. I'm getting the idea that we have different tastes in books. ^^ Is there an author you particularly like? :-)

Yay for liking EotN! Will you go on to read The Silver Branch? I can't quite remember if it's about Marcus' son, or grandson...
