On the user info page for this site, it says:
"Feel free to post questions concerning characters, underwear, or even plot points, such as 'Who was that Goddess at the end of The Queen of Attolia?'"

OK, feeling free. Who WAS the goddess? I have read through the books several times, and I have NO FREAKING IDEA. Can anybody help out?

I thought it was the goddess who lost her daughter to Hephestaeus (sp?)? That's who I always thought it was, that she was better equipped than anyone to tell Gen to quit whining.

Was there a goddess who lost her daughter to Hephestia? There was Callia, whose daughter Hespira married Horreon, the goddess Meridite's son, but Callia was a mortal.

I thought it was a goddess we didn't hitherto know. Do we have enough information to guess who it was? If it was supposed to be obvious, I missed the clues!

Now that you mention it...I mean, if we were going for goddesses we knew, I'd put my bets on Hespira, who may or may not have become a goddess. But I think it's just some nameless goddess who thought Gen was cute, maybe of a river or something.

i wouldn't know but hey mysteries are fun. maybe just maybe we might find out in the next book *squees*

logically, that goddess sympathises with Gen. otherwise why would she 'help' him? therefore, maybe she could have had something similar happen to her or someone around her, maybe even a mortal she liked?

I don't think we are meant to know. Even Gen couldn't guess, and he had actually sacrificed to her in the past. It sounds as if she might have been a water goddess--she had a "voice as gentle as rain and as cool as water" and Gen had usually offered sacrifices at water temples.

So why did she intervene between Gen and the Great Goddess? How had he won her favor that she would do that? The other gods didn't spend a lot of time explaining things to him. The Great Goddess showed her power by making the glass break and through the vision of the mountain exploding, but this goddess was gentle and wanted him to understand that he had not been betrayed by the gods, and the reasons for what had happened to him.

Why this unknown goddess and not Eugenides, Gen's patron god who had spoken to him in the past?

I was thinking of Meridite, mixing her up with the mother. It's been a while.

I dunno, I think it's somehow someone from that story Eddis told; that seems relevant, and wouldn't have just been thrown into QoA without a reason. It would give either mother, mortal and goddess both, experience enough in loss to be sympathetic to Gen.

Yes, but MWT doesn't do things arbitrarily... It's not her style to just throw someone in like that.

That's very true. I'll have to go back and read Meridite's story.

I think we can't know for sure who she is at this point, but I do have a strong suspicion it might be someone mentioned before, maybe in Meridite's story, maybe in the first book.

It's Rowana

I can't log on here, but it's your friendly neighbourhood mod. I remember grinning to myself when I typed that - we had a bit of a debate about it a few months ago. None of us actually managed to answer the question, and Megan gave us a 'Not Telling' when we asked.

So, it's still open to interpretation.

More importantly, though, what kind of underwear would a goddess wear??

...You were all thinking it!

haha! I emailed Megan asking her about a month ago. She said that the goddess was no goddess mentioned in the books and that she wasn't going to tell us. She also said she wants to fill it in as backstory later.
