With me, it happens sometimes with other people's behavior. See, I'm about as opposite from Gen as a person could be. It just never used to occur to me that someone's actions--actions that seem perfectly innocent--might be from ulterior motives. Because Gen does it so well, it made me aware enough to think through what someone may really be thinking
My co-worker and I have gotten really good at asking very innocent, innocuous questions that appear to be small talk, but are really are meant to get the scoop on things that are going on in the building that we've heard about but don't have any details on. It's amazing what people will tell you, if you just have the nerve to ask.
