Just had to share this small moment of triumph. :)

So there I was sneaking into the library just before closing to pick up the next book in the Lumatere chronicles (starting with Finnikin of the Rock, and it's fantastic by the way). It was meant to be a blitz job. Get in, hug the book, get out. No fuss, no muss. And then of course I *had* to take a peek at the New Arrivals display and there, not ten feet away from me, a mom is asking a librarian behind the desk for book suggestions for her son. He's wanting adventure books, his mother says. And here I am cocking my head unable to stop my own eavesdropping.

Anthony Horrowitz is named and I am thinking "Oh no, no, no. We can do better than that," and off I slip into the stacks. Like a ninja in the night. And I found precisely what I was looking for.

Politely as I can, I move into the conversation (I know the librarian. Yes, I am nerd. Hear me roar) and she sees the book in my hand and her eyes light up, and she takes it all from there. The Thief exchanges hands and I slip away a happy person. I could have skipped.

Hopefully we'll have a new convert soon. ^_^

So, so proud. :D

This is why I pick up a copy of the books whenever I happen upon them at sales. There's always another unsuspecting child to gift them to... *rubs hands together and chuckles*

What are these Lumatere books you speak of? *interested*

Very cool! Has the librarian read The Thief too, do you know? It seems like the reaction of someone who is just as excited to bestow the book on a new reader as we are.

What a cute story! You have done a great deed!

But I have to admit I could not finish Finnikin. I thought it was dark and dreary, and so...stock-fantasy and predictable! It's been recommended so many times though, I feel like I have to try again.

I liked the next one better. I'm with you on Finnikin. But still...Melina Marchetta...

Melina Marchetta's foray into fantasy. That should so be the name of a book.

Do we have an award for heatherz? Seems to me you should get one for being a rockstar recommender. Just sayin'.

YOU ROCK

I found it a "stock fantasy" because of the depressed main character, evil king who overthrew the royal family (that might not be what happened--the details are fuzzy, but I know the royal children were killed), lost girl who just HAPPENS to be the princess, mentor figure, blah, blah, blah. Usually I'm okay with all kinds of fantasy, but I couldn't get into the characters. The story was so dark, barely any humor, and what humor there was I found forced. However, I know most people, such as yourself, really loved the series. This might just be one of those times where the writer and reader simply don't click.....I mean, there's always that one writer that everyone loves that you don't, you know?

But to answer your question, I stopped reading when they escape the prison...I believe I left them in some sort of slum camp.
