Eugenides with Hemiathes' Gift

Hey, every one. This is my very first post though I've been reading and watching this community for a couple of years now.
Below is Gen with Hemiathes' Gift. I'm working to get his expression right, but it's pretty hard. =)

You did really well on his expression! He looks clever and deceptively lazy, like he knows something you don't, which of course Gen always does. If you're up for advice, I'd try raising one of the eyebrows a little higher (it looks like you tried doing it with his right one a little bit)--a raised eyebrow always gives someone an extra sneaky/clever look.

Super interesting interpretation of Eugenides, too! I always imagined him slight, feline, and having short hair. But in this picture he looks like he's pretty tall, and he has such nice, full lips!

Off topic question: how do you get your sketch so clean looking? Mine always look like they've been through hell and back...

Yay! because I worked really hard on the feet! Those are pretty much my feet, only they turned out manlier than I expected. =) Doesn't hurt my femininity at all. Anything for art, yeah? Heh.

Oh I tried and tried to get the eyebrow higher. For some reason this sketch nearly made me cry with its refusal to form the sneaky expression I wanted. I used the eraser a lot, which I hate doing (precisely because the sketch ends up messy) but he always ended up looking a little odd when I raised the brow. I'm redoing this now and this time he does look a little more like he Gen in my head. =)

For the longest time I thought Gen had short hair too - or at least only long enough to tie into a thick, short plait. On my second read of The Thief I realized MWT had pretty consistently been telling me that Eugenides was a man of long, long tresses. =D
I like his lips too. Unintended on my part, but then I thought - why not? Heh.

I don't think my sketches are any cleaner than anyone else's it's just the scanner I use that makes the paper look super smooth and picks up only the well defined pencil lines. I love my scanner.

I know how you feel about all the erasing and erasing and wanting to cry. Drawing is SO HARD.

But I think you nailed the expression anyway =) And I agree with teacups_i_swear, the feet are awesome.

I made the same realization about Gen's hair upon rereading as well...but sometimes I just ignore the author's description...terrible thing, I know, but I've always imagined Gen with short hair. Can't do it any other way. His braid is invisible. Hamiathe's Gift hides in an invisible braid.

I do this for Tamora Pierce's books too, if you've ever read those. Whenever she writes "and then Jonathan/Raoul rubbed his mustache" I'm like NO. THEY DO NOT HAVE MUSTACHES.

I KNOW. I totally deleted the 'staches in my head! But at the end of the day I don't think authors like Tamora and Megan mind us having our own modified descriptions of their characters. Once we read and love them they become ours, and good authors like them only want to engage our hearts and minds with their stories, they don't care about little details so long as the story succeeded in hooking us.

Looking good! I like his feet....I know, that sounds weird, but feet are hard - I had an art professor who refused to draw feet. You did great :)
