Dear Sounis,

Ok, here's my problem. I need something really good to read, but it can't involve murdered cats. The last two books I've started have, coincidentally, had cats killed in the first few chapters. I just can't *do* dead cats right now, I don't care if you ARE Neil Gaiman. So, here's what I need right now:

Escapist fare, or
Something fantasy-ish, with characters and a story line similar to Queen's Thief, or the Farsala books, or the Eli Monpress series

Also, I'm actually reading 2 really good books right now: Seraphina and The Way of Kings, but I just haven't had time to pursue my reading, because of school.

Still, they're lacking a bit on the Monpress-y side, even if they've got the politics flavour that I like.

I loved Seraphina. Hmm, have you read Girl of Fire and Thorns and the sequel Crown of Embers? They are by Rae Carson and are very good. I think I can get my hands on the third book, The Bitter Kingdom.

Hey Checkers! Have you read the FullMetal Alchemist Manga? (too lazy to look up author) It's a lot like QT, and Farsala, and Books and I read it because it was recommended for Eli Monpress fans! It's a little bit on the heavier side, but not too bad, and they don't kill any cats (actually one of the characters has a reputation for saving cats!) and there's even a cute little pande they keep calling a cat!

I have read a volume or two of Fullmetal, a long time ago. I liked it! Especially the angstyness of the main characters. I'll give it a try!

On a completely different note, I love in the Vorkosigian books how Ivan likes kittens, and Miles doesn't mind them a bit, either.

HOW DID YOU READ MY MIND CHECKERS. That is exactly how I've been feeling about books. I just finished re-re-reading The Book Thief, which is a great book, but it took me awhile because I wasn't really getting caught up in it if that makes sense, and now I really want to read something which is a) VERY not Book Thief (i.e. I want something more happy and fast-paced) and b) I haven't read before. I want something.... like our favorite series, but not. I want... Escapist fare, or Something fantasy-ish, with characters and a story line similar to Queen's Thief, or the Farsala books, or the Eli Monpress series, actually. :-) I've read Seraphina and Girl of Fire and Thorns.... haven't read the sequels yet though. Have you tried Digger by Ursula Vernon? Originally published as a webcomic, it's got a wombat for a main character and it's epic as Digger tries to avoid all sorts of fantasy tropes.

I'd also recommend N. D. Wilson's Ashtown Burials series, though I don't think that quite fits your description...

Hey, Checkers! I have two words for you -- Jonathan Stroud!

I just finished the first book of his new series -- it's called The Screaming Staircase, and it's great fun. No dead cats at all! Teenage ghost hunters, with a rather Sherlockian vibe -- I loved it!

I also just read a middle grade fantasy by Karen Foxlee called Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy, which is a pretty amazing Snow Queen retelling. I fear that this one actually does have dead cats, of the large and dangerous variety (lions, snow leopards and such). But you don't actually see any of them die. They are museum exhibits that come to life periodically and then retreat to their cases in an unsettling and unpredictable way. But perhaps that would not suit you? Too many cats, or too dead? I do recommend the book, though!

Last week, I read Rachel Neumeier's Floating Islands, which I actually thought was wonderful -- better than I expected (and it was well reviewed, so I thought it might be good).

Right now, I have a hold on the third book of Veronica Rossi's trilogy, which I am expecting will be amazing. ~~(So much better than Veronica Roth's. I was going to edit that out, but I won't! I really didn't enjoy Divergent or its sequels.)~~

And, if you should happen to be in the mood for something more realistic… today I (finally!) read Tanita Davis's A La Carte, at Elizabeth Wein's recommendation, and I loved it!

Or, if you'd like something with a real, live cat in it (a book, I mean, not your house!), I also just read James Bowen's The World According to Bob, and I loved that, too! (Better than the first one, imo).

Oh, I adore Jonathon Stroud! I had a long conversation with him once and fangirled him and he drew a bat in my book. *sigh*nnI haven't read his new series but suspect The Screaming Staircase might be in the last of of stack of boxes of new books sitting in my library. I will look for it!

I've heard good things about Floating Islands. ~~And totally agree about Divergent. Couldn't even pick up the second book.~~

One summer I read Joan Vinge's Cat series--Psion, Catspaw, Dreamfall. They may be a bit hard to find, but very good.

Ah, I'm keeping a good distance from Girl of Fire and Thorns, because people have told me it has love triangles, and that trope is quite a pet peeve of mine. If it didn't though, I might have been more interested in checking it out, since so many Sounisians appear to love it. =D

Oh yeah, Fullmetal Alchemist is really good. That was the first manga I've actually read, because a lot of LoEM fans liked it, and several Sounisians as well. The last few volumes are especially intense. ^^

Get thee to a bookstore and pick up Rosamund Hodge's Cruel Beauty. I read the book in one sitting on the release day and then blathered about it all over Twitter because I loved it so much. Now I'm just kicking myself that I bought the e-book instead of a physical copy.
