I attempted to read 150 books this year, yet failed miserably because I kept getting distracted rereading Queen's Thief. I lost count of what I actually did manage to read. Highlights were... "Golden Daughter" by Anne Elisabeth Stengl, and "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier. Seriously, I'm recommending those to EVERYONE.
Completely off topic: I just discovered the underwear tag. *jaw drops*
71! One of my favourites was Queen of Attolia & King of Attolia, which I read this year. I actually made a post about the books I read (http://silverflight8.livejournal.com/351955.html) :)
Real life (read: graduating, getting a full time job, getting married, and moving across the country) completely threw off my (very small!) reading goal, and keeping track of reading too.
The Goblin Emperor was a highlight. I liked Poison Study as well. Nothing else is really coming to mind right now... it wasn't much of a year for reading, unfortunately.
I managed to finish 169 books, though that doesn't include rereads (which Goodreads doesn't count), or the copious amounts of Avengers fan fiction that I consumed (don't judge me). I would have read more, but I started watching Supernatural and those crazy Winchester boys kind of took over my life.
I had quite a few favorites this year. My favorite YA series starters were The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson and Marie Rutkoski's The Winner's Curse. Cress by Marissa Meyer and Maggie Stiefvater's Blue Lily, Lily Blue were my favorite additions to series.
In the realm of adult fiction, Traitor's Blade by Sebastien de Castell was probably my favorite. If you want a book that makes you feel all the feels, is chock-full of amazing, hilarious characters, where buckles are swashed, well, this is your book.
Pierce Brown's Red Rising was also excellent, though I read an ARC of the sequel, Golden Son, and it was even better. If you enjoy sci-fi that does a good job developing characters and plot, do check this series out.
I read a little more than 30, I think, which is probably the most I have ever read in a year, lol. I also made a summary of my reading experience in 2014 here (http://manderelee.livejournal.com/21230.html) (which I've been doing for about 4 years now). The best book I've probably read in 2014 was The Winner's Curse, which I found through one of the WSK posts last year, so thanks Sounis!!
Oh, I read Traitor's Blade as well, but I didn't like it that much. =( I mean, it was okay, but the GR reviews made him sound so charming and stuff, and he just fell a little short of my expectations (yeah... he wasn't that charming nor that funny to me).
But I totally second The Winner's Curse! That's my best book of 2014! =D
I read 37 books this year, which might be an all-time low for me, plus many of them were re-reads. (MWT, Robin McKinley, Maggie Stiefvater, Dorothy Sayers...) Most of the 'new' books were history, biography, or some other form of non-fiction. I'm hoping to sink my teeth into some good fantasy this year. It's been too long. ;) Also, for fans of Sherwood Smith's Crown Duel and Court Duel, I recommend A Stranger to Command. It's a prequel of sorts, about Vidanric prior to meeting Mel. I read it a long time ago, on Smith's website, but it's available now through Amazon kindle (I just use the kindle app on my phone). Worth a read!
Jeez, Rosie, a person has a *few* life changes and can't make their reading goal??? :-)
I was so frustrated with The Goblin Emperor when I read it--all those crazy names, and the thees and thous. But now I've been shopping around for a used copy to reread. I was sad when I read there was not going to be a sequel to the book.
I enjoyed a Stranger to Command! At least as a prequel to Crown Duel and Court Duel. I finally read about 2 years ago when I was able to request it from a different library district ..... then my dad dropped it in a mud puddle and I was terrified they were going to charge me for it!
I read 53 books, which is right about my usual number. Favorites were Jasper Fforde's Song of the Quarkbeast (middle grade fantasy, and hilarious. It's a sequel to The Last Dragonslayer), the Legend series by Marie Lu (like Divergent but better, with a great ending), A Matter of Profit by Hilari Bell (an older book that's harder to find), The Winner's Curse, The Goblin Emperor, The Name of the Wind series by Rothfuss, and my most favorite, the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch.
...And here is Lois Mcmaster Bujold's review of the first book in the Rivers of London series. Which is called Midnight Riot in the US. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/481437998
I read 88 books this year. Some of my favorites included Geek girl by Smale (super funny and cute, also very British), The wise man's fear by Rothfus (A very good traditional fantasy novel) , FanGirl by Rowell (one of the best YA books I've read in a while) and my favorite Words of radiance by Brandon Sanderson (basically anything Brandon is amazing)

I hope you saw the part where she said we'll "have to continue to ruminate on Gen's underwear." I mean, have to, right? That was about the same time she called us reprobates. It's all her fault. <3
I read 68 books, including rereads, excluding comics. Highlights include (but are not limited to) some fun free/sale kindle books from BookBub, the new Shannon Hale novel Dangerous (beta-read by MWT!), some first-time Agatha Christie reads (I was more of a Sayers/Conan Doyle/Tey mystery fan as a kid/teen, so I didn't devour all of the Christie stuff like I did those two), the surprisingly complex Vampire Academy series, a nice new scifi novel in Red Rising, and a few excellent continued series (the Wearing the Cape series by Marion G. Harmon in particular).
On the reread highlights was the 1990s Star Wars: X-Wing novel series, spurred on initially by my love of them, but then also by the sad news that Aaron Allston, my favorite of the two authors who worked on that series, passed away this spring.
The comics front had me rediscovering my love of Greg Rucka's work - his runs on Punisher and his original series Lazarus in particular.
I greatly enjoyed Red Rising as well! Interesting world, tense plot, characters solid - and some fun inside jokes for longtime scifi fans. :) I'm eagerly awaiting Golden Son.
I read the heck out of that X-Wing series during the nineties (I might have had a thing for Wedge Antilles). Now I'm kind of sad that I sold my copies of those books in a garage sale.
Wedge Antilles remains one of my favorite characters of all time. :) I think I still have my old ex-library copies of the series, but I just rebought them all on kindle. :)
Awww, it makes me sad when people don't like the books I love, but it does happen. I have a library patron who comes to me quite frequently for reading suggestions, and she thought The Thief was just okay. Darn near broke my heart, but everyone has their own tastes and that's fine. There's a book for every reader and a reader for every book. :-)
I'm glad you loved The Winner's Curse as much as I did. I don't know how I'm going to wait until March to find out what happens to Kestrel and Arin. Given that it's the second book in a trilogy, I just know that things won't end on a positive note in The Winner's Crime, and my poor nerves will be frayed for yet another year.
Looks like all my favorite authors have found Midnight Riot to be fantastic and it sounds great. I think I need to check this one out this year (well, ILL it, since my library does not own it). Thanks for the tip!
I loved Fangirl, which is saying something, since contemporary isn't generally my genre of choice. It reminded me so much of my first semester of my undergrad years, which shouldn't have been a good thing, since I was absolutely miserable during that time, but I always like it when I can relate to a character I'm reading about.
Have you read Landline by Rainbow Rowell? It's definitely more of an adult book than YA or New Adult, but she has such a way of bringing characters to life and making you fall in love with them, and this book is no exception.
*adds Winner's Curse to TBR pile* What's the consensus on Goblin Emperor? Should I brave it?
I always give people The Thief and Queen of Attolia together, on condition that they can't stop after book 1. Not because Thief is any less of a book, but with the hindsight factor in mind, plus the huge character developments that come in book 2, I think it's crucial to keep onward and not set the series down for too long between books. I've had more success with this than simply giving them the first book and hoping they track down the others.
Oh, well, I think I just had a very different expectation coming into that book. The funny, swashbuckling adventure it started out as was reminiscent of Theft of Swords by Michael Sullivan, and to an extent, Spirit Thief by Rachel Aaron. I was sorely disappointed when his friends went away a quarter through the book and it became all up to him to always save the day (I'm very fond of the whole team work and heist kind of adventure), and he ended up feeling very Marty Stuish as I closed the book. I did, however, really enjoy the last twist about Aline though!
OMG, did you get the Winner's Crime 3-chapter preview though (I think you have to retweet the author's promo on Twitter to get it)?? They sent it to me on a newsletter, and akjdf;laksdj so MUCH angst!!! I'm thinking of actually holding off reading Winner's Crime until the third one comes out, because based on the reviews from advanced copy readers, your assumption that it's not going to end well seems pretty spot on. I don't know how much self-discipline I have though, lol. I'll prob just read Winner's Crime and then cry myself to sleep till the third one comes out.
I read the three chapter preview a little while back, since I subscribe to the Mac Teen newsletter, and I swear these things are just as much a curse as a blessing. I want that book in my hands now, not in two months. If you are able to wait another year to read The Winner's Crime, you officially have more will-power than I ever will possess in my entire life. I have very little self-control when it comes to books and I will probably pay for it by being a teary, snotty mess by the end of this book.
Hi Rain! I loved Name of the Wind, too, though I kept saying to myself, "this guy needs an editor!" and "gah! All the action stopped again. I just felt like there were so many parts of the book where not much happened. But Kvothe is an awesome character! I haven't decided if I'm going to read The Slow Regard of Silent Things. Auri isn't my favorite character and the...book? novella?...didn't get the best reviews. I just wish he'd get book 3 done.
I think Goblin Emperor was worth the effort it took to read. If I'd seen the glossary in the back that helped with all the names before I was 3/4 through the book it would have been nice. > .
I just read that this week. It's so immersive, it took me hours to come out of it. What a fabulous setting for gaming! I was hoping for lots more [development, but especially Maia].
I'm not sure how many books I read; I never keep track! But I re-read the Albert Campion books, and Wodehouse's Jeeves books, and the Boxcar Children (the original 19 books), and did a lot of Richard III and other English history books. And Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie books.
Also I have been reading books about Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, to whom I have developed a great devotion. There are several that have been translated into English, but in one case I resorted to the German edition (in that terrible old Fraktur typeface, where the f's and the s's and the k's all look almost exactly alike). Had to have Google Translate handy for some of the words. And now I'm getting my hands on Italian books. I don't speak Italian anymore - not since we left Italy when I was 4 - but with some Latin and some leftover memories and of course Google Translate I'm working my way through them. I can get the gist, most of the time, and when I get lost that's when Google Translate gets roped in.
The superheroes. Black Widow/Hawkeye stories are probably my favorite. I confess I hadn't heard of Steed and Mrs. Peel, so I'm going to have to check them out.
