Since Lois has said this is a book about Cordelia, you'd want to read the omnibus _Cordelia's Honor_, which contains _Shards of Honor_ and _Barrayar_, the only other stories in the series told from her point of view. That's also the beginning of the series.
You'd have plenty of time to read the others before the new one comes out next year, even at an easy rate of a book a month. That way you'd get all the references. Bujold being Bujold, it's not necessary [all her books stand alone], but would probably add to your enjoyment.
