The first two things you mention, interrupting Eddis and carelessly announcing his engagement, I chalked up to his boyish exuberance and the excitement of finally having things settled with Helen. And his outburst where he says he certainly can't marry her because he can't ask her to bow down to Eugenides--maybe that was coming from his newly found leadership as king.
He deserved to demand answers from Eddis. She kept so many things from him, including that library in Attolia after he'd told Eddis all about his dreams.
