You have such a great way of seeing events in the books in ways that I missed--all the different aspects from a broader frame of reference. I think you are totally right about Sophos' continual misunderstanding of Irene and all she is trying to do for him, in her own Irene-ish way. He wanted that eye contact from his friends and HERE SHE WAS OFFERING HIM EXACTLY WHAT HE NEEDED and he didn't even get it. Poor Irene! It is a testament to her that the people who really know her (Gen, Relius, her attendants) love her in spite of the actions she had to carry out to keep her throne. Megan mentioned once that she likes happy endings, so we'll hope for the best.
