I thought many of the same things. That Gen started in about cutting the guard in half (probably in his cutting, bossy way), and made her so angry she threw the inkpot. Who knows, maybe he flinched and that brought back to her what she had done to him, and that she no longer wanted him to be afraid of her. And I do think his tears were sympathetic ones.
Megan once said she'd written the entire wedding night scene, then taken it out. Gah! And she said that we already know why they cried--she cut off his hand and he stole her country. Obviously, the two of them had a lot to work through.
