I agree with you... I didn't really like Kamet in my first read of TAT. I find him the most difficult to like, of the six, I find myself triggered by his arrogance and his judgment of Costis and his eagerness to feel like he's better than everyone else for reasons that are very superficial. He's the most like the kind of person that irritates me the most in real life! So in other words, I wrote this analysis kind of as a way to help myself better understand him by comparing his similarities with Irene, whose character I understand completely and sympathize with totally.

But... I'm on my 2nd reread right now and I am finding that I like him more and more because I understand that he "needed" those things to survive in the same way Irene isn't instantaneously a nice and considerate person for a long while after her and Eugenides first get together.
