It is definitely not light-hearted reading - if the first feels grim, I wouldn't recommend the remainder, as there are some darker topics explored and some definite emotional gut-punches over the story arc. I wasn't sure I wanted to read it again after the first time around and have only done my second read-through this year, a good 8+ years after the first.
I'm really so happy to hear that there is a lot of crossover - I've suggested each respective author to the other fandom on a couple of occasions, and apparently have just been in the wrong groups as no one I've spoken to has been interested or tried the other series and didn't like it. Le weep, le sorrow. Now I want to find other fans, and feel like I'm going to be a Despicable Me minion running around the interwebs looking for 'buddies'.
