I know that this debate has gone on and on and on and on for the four sovereign and I need only do a search for them, but what about the ages of the other characters?
I just got done with my 3rd re-read of KoA (third straight through, like 25th re-read if you count non-linearly) and I fell so completely in love with Relius this time around.
I keep wanting to group Relius with the Magus (older advisor to the two Sounis's), the Minister of War (uncle and older advisor to Eddis and Gen's father)... both of whom I imagine to be in their 40's or 50's. (I say 40's only because people during that time didn't live as long back then). But.... doesn't canon say that Relius was "just a boy" when Attolia found him hiding under a muddy wagon to catch a glimpse of her... when she was what like a 16 or 17 year old queen? In around the first year she ruled. And I believe it goes that Relius was a nobody, the bastard son of a poor mother or middle class, but illegitimacy might have made him unable to claim any middle class privileges. So doesn't that make Relius around the same age as Attolia herself? In his mid 20's by the time KoA happens? Yet, he seems to act like a mentor and a teacher or even... maybe a father-figure to her, but all the stuff about the "things he taught her...." it seems like Relius is as skilled at analyzing deceit as Gen is at creating deceit. As a "nobody," how was he able to attain these skills? Were they a study of his own creation? Does anyone have any other speculations on Relius's age?
It never really says exactly... but I remember somewhere that Costis is described as older than Eugenides, and older than the queen even? But very young for a palace guard of his rank, chosen specially a year before he makes the age cut off because he shows promise. So that would put Costis in his late 20's by TAT. And what about Kamet? His age is even more obscure. I assume Kamet is about the same age as Costis, making Costis, Kamet, and Relius all a few years older than Attolia.
And what about Teleus? Costis is described as a "younger version of Teleus" and Teleus had to have taken some years to have risen in rank amongst the palace guard and yet still be in his soldier/fighting prime... So would that put him sometime in his 30's? But again.... I keep wanting to imagine Relius and Teleus as about the same age but then again is Relius younger than he seems?
