I've been taking an evening printmaking class for the last year or so, and I recently found myself with four extra pieces of linoleum, a habit of defaulting to landscapes, and lots of thoughts and feelings about qt ... so I made some sprints depicting specific settings in the books, one each for Eddis, Attolia, Sounis, and the Mede Empire. I stuck them up on tumblr with accompanying quotes, but I wanted to post them all together here, with a few more details. :)

The prints are all pretty small! The ones that are square are 3x3 inches, so their size kind of determined the detail of my carving. The images here are scanned, which means that they don't really look like prints, but the photos I first took didn't turn out well at all.

Eddis:

“There were still patches of snow in the shade, and the wind blew through his thin shirt. The hill was steep, and he was quickly out of breath, but he climbed on until he reached the empty porch of the temple. … He hadn’t come to pray. He’d come to hide.” - The Queen of Attolia

I associate Eddis with cold, outdoor moments - this flight of Gen's to the temple, the "you're not the boy hero anymore" conversation on the roof with Helen, and all the passages describing the changing of the seasons. I'm not completely happy with this print -- the mountains are overly pointy, and Hephestia's temple is surely farther away from the palace than the way I've depicted it, but "He hadn't come to pray. He'd come to hide" cuts me to my core every time, so I really wanted to depict a setting connected to it.

Attolia:

“I walked between lemon trees, standing like soldiers at attention on either side of the path, to a door into the orangerie, where the trees were planted in circles around an open grassy lawn.” - Thick as Thieves

IT'S THE ORANGE TREES, Y'ALL. I had to choose the orange trees! I enjoy that their appearance in TaT shows us how they connect to the rest of the gardens, but, as I didn't actually reference the book when I carved this, the layount/connection isn't super clear. Does it still look like a nice place to dance?

Sounis:

“No one knows when Elisa’s slopes were first terraced and lined with marble seats, but the temple keeps lists of the plays performed here during the spring and fall festivals, and they go back hundreds of years, all the way back to when the plays were performed in the archaic language on the open orchestral ground in front of the seats.” - A Conspiracy of Kings

This one is ... a little more abstracted and doesn't exactly look like an amphitheater, but can you picture the Sounisian and Attolian troops springing out of those trees, breaking truces like nobody's business?

Medea:

“We had made our way through the valleys and ridges of loose rock, climbing highter after each descent until we’d reached a ridge where we could see across a patchy plain to the mountains on the far side. The Taymets.” - Thick as Thieves

This is a little abstract and simplified as well, but I like how it turned out. I kind of wish I'd tried to include the farm they stay at, but I also figured that nobody would be able to suspend their disbelief that it would be visible from that ridge. But check out those super intimidating mountains, huh?

I might try printing them all together, perhaps in color instead of black. Does anyone have colors that they particularly associate with the countries?

EDIT: I printed a whole lot of these and don't know what to do with them. If you'd like one or two or a whole set, message me? I will send them to you for free.
