It's in The Thief, right after Ambiades hits/punches Gen in the stream and Sophos tells Gen that Ambiades's grandfather was Duke of Eumen. Around page 100, it probably depends what copy you've got.
It's gotta be big enough for common Eddisians to know because Sophos expects Gen to understand. Treachery, not paying taxes, stealing taxes, trying to overthrow the king? We could ask Megan. I would, but I don't want to bug her twice in one month.
Found it. Well, heck, it says right here, "he tried to return the oligarchy." So apparently Ambiades's grandfather was involved in a conspiracy to depose the king and restore an older style of government in which a group of nobles ruled. And apparently it didn't work. All of which brings up another issue: Sounis seems every bit as unstable as Attolia. There was this Eumen Conspiracy a while ago. Lately there's been a civil war. Things haven't been going too smoothly in Sounis.
Oh my, I've been reading that sentence wrong for 7 years. For some reason I saw it as "he tried to return to the oligarchy" why, oh why? It's amazing how your eyes and mind can trick you. Or maybe I'm just plain stupid: probably a carry-over from my skim-reading/never reading anything properly days. The Thief changed all that, of course.
Ahhhh, riighht. I always thought that sentence meant he was trying to return his land to the state or something and I'd always wonder why would he want to do that? Lol, thanks for clearing it up.
