Spent a portion of the weekend tracking down a parallel quote between King of Attolia and Game of Kings, and in the course of my research happened back upon this Sounis discussion from years ago about Gen-like characters in other works (https://sounis.livejournal.com/266931.html#comments).  I hadn't forgotten the discussion, but it was actually quite a surprise to review and realize just how many of my favorite books as an adult I owe to this group, and that discussion in particular (Dunnett, Heyer, Sayers, Wrede; DWJ, Sutcliffe, and Sherwood Smith books I hadn't known about yet, and many more).

So at the risk of sounding sappy over fiction and clever but possibly petty characters, thank you all for being there, and for the influence your favorites have had in my life over the last decade+.  Also, [livejournal.com profile] ladyofastolat if you see this, a big thank you to you specifically.

Also, this led me to another delightfully exciting TBR list that started with False Prince as it was the only availabe book at my library while I was there.  Have we discussed this before, and is there confirmation the author is a mwt fan?  Because wow were there some overt parallels!

I wasn’t on board at the time of the aforementioned thread so thanks for the link! I looked through it and added “Scaramouche” to my reading wish list! It didn’t look like anyone mentioned Reville, the romantic thief from Diana Wynn Jones’ “Dark Lord of Derkholm.” The gods in that book definitely remind me of MWT’s gods, too.

Oh man, I miss those days of getting recommendations from all of you. It's fun to read all that again.

And you may disagree, but...I've always said that False Prince doesn't just have overt parallels, it's a rip-off of TT. Just my opinion. It always made me mad when my students raved about False Prince but I couldn't get them to read TT. "Why can't you see reason, all you 12-year-olds!"

Looks like that thread pre-dates my delurkation (new word!) by a few months, but Sounis has certainly shaped me and my reading life in many ways in those 10+ years! I'm glad it exists, too. <3

Aw, it is always a delight to run into other Sounisians. This feels like my internet home country.

And yeah, I unified my username across most platforms a couple years ago, to make things easier. :)
