Also, Lady Jane and I had a lovely chat about The Lantern Bearers on Sunday, but we stuck to the first 40% of the book, so I thought I'd post the things I had flagged in the last 60% here:

"'What a beautiful thing an apple is. One so seldom notices....'" There was Paulinius' apple tree in The Silver Branch. And I imagne the bells on the silver branch looking like apples. Where there any apple references in The Eagle of the Ninth?

"...the same womanish trick of playing with the same string of raw amber round his neck as he sat sideways in his chair, his other hand on the narwal ivory hilt of his sword, and watched Ambrosius under his brows." The man who wants to be king looking maybe not so kingly as he sits on his throne?

"Unaccountable were the ways of men, and still more unaccountable the ways of hosts that were quite unlike the ways of the men from which they were made." Well phrased observation.

"It's Valarius,' he said. 'Get him back, lads. The devils! See what they have done to him!'" Shades of when 3 of Attolia's spies return from the Mede empire.

"'It is wonderful what one victory in the hands of the right man will do,' Eugenus said musingly beside him." .... "Aquila glanced at him, but said nothing. Odd, to have started a legend." Comparing the end of RotT to the end of Lantern would made an interesting discussion.
