Um, Hi. Seeing how I suddenly got very vocal in the past couple days.  I should really introduce myself.

I'm Kee.  I've been lurking here for a while, and will probably sneak back into the shadows soon enough.  I'm a post-grad student (Anglo-Irish Literature), so I balance insane amounts of things I should be doing with a well developed tendency to procrastinate.  Posting to livejournal tends to happen when the procrastination level reaches "insane."  "Insane" happens a lot, and not just with procrastination.  I'm a Californian living in Ireland.  :)  (I'm also up way past my bedtime as usual.)

I picked up The Thief  thanks to a recommendation on a mailing list discussing another author.  I loved it,  passed it around to friends, and picked up the sequels as soon as they appeared.  They're now all on my list of comfort books.  My mental image of Gen can be a bit blurry at times, but Eddis and Attolia are quite clear.  For some odd reason the Magus has always sounded like Sean Connery to me, so that tends to be how I picture him as well.

Magus : Sean Connery

What a perfect image!

Welcome, Kee! You've had some very interesting comments.

Welcome! (You wouldn't happen to know anything about The Faerie Queene, would you? XD) I am quite jealous of your location.

Feel free to stop by the Conspiracy Room at any time.

Well, I did manage to make it through high school without ever reading Jane Eyre, so I can understand how that might happen (though for you to get all the way through grad school without it is a bit o_O). We did sonnets too, but I think I skipped one of those days.

(I'm so totally not writing a paper about TFQ right now and desperately looking for someone who will understand me when I start ranting and raving about how Duessa's character is too complex to be covered in a ten page paper and how I need to limit myself and not get distracted by intruiging theological abstractions concerning the body of the Church vs. its leaders, and the idea that Duessa as a psychological person [though clearly she's meant to be more allegorical than physical] might have some sort of separation anxiety disorder that causes her to cling to the people who come into her life, as those people are constantly changing and she has no stability.)

(...focus, Jade, focus...)

Does it help that you've now made me want to read it?

Oh, I'd definitely recommend it. I'm going to try to read the other six books this summer. Then again, I think half the reason this was so much fun was that I studied it in class, and so my prof was pointing out all the little subtleties--I don't know if I'd be able to rant about Duessa half as much if we hadn't talked about it in class.

but it's very good! it's very, very good. (it's no good sir! time's up! The ladies'll have to go now, sir.)

Oooooh...that sounds like fun. What're you planning to do once you get your degree?

Haha, I just finished my last day of classes, and my English class ended the past three classes with Paradise Lost. I agree with what you said (I wouldn't like it half so much if I didn't have such an amusing professor--his summaries of Adam and Eve's exchanges were hilarious) about that--I cringe to think of everything I have to go back and reread, now that I've read that and The Faerie Queene, so that I can get all the references.

We're supposed to to an intro. post? *guilty look*. I just launched straight in.

I, too, have a very blurry image of Gen, but a clearer image of the other characters. I suppose this is because the first book is narrated by Gen in the first person, so he's the only character who doesn't get a physical description. However, come to think of it, I often have a rather hazy mental image of my favourite characters, but a much clearer image of the more minor ones. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because it matters more with the ones I love.

You don't have to do an intro post!!! Welcome!

I didn't

Hi from another usual lurker! Totally OT, but given where you're studying, we probably have some people in common. (And not the ones to whom you passed around the MWT books - assuming that was in California!)

Anglo-Irish lit! That's crazy talk! I have just barely survived two terms of Anglo-Saxon. I finished my last essay last night, and proceeded to dream that I was a viking queen, experiencing an accurate last third of Beowulf fighting the dragon, although Wiglaf actually saved my life.

But yeah... welcome to Sounis. I lurk here. ^_^

Welcome! This is a crazy place but all the people here are really nice, and sometimes we actually have reasoned discussion about the books... the rest of the time it's just chaos. But if you've been lurking I'm sure you know that. :D

Welcome Kee! Ulp, yes, the procrastination-insanity-past bedtime story sounds soooo familiar. Thanks for the intro (Um, I just delurked. Are we supposed to do intro posts? They're so sweet.)

Sean Connery? Hey. I was thinking Ian McKellen.

Welcome! I wonder if dear Avian might find a photo of a 45-ish Sean Connery and make us a Magus icon...

Don't worry about not doing an introductory post, anyone. I still haven't done one. :)

Though we've already agreed that the riding crop joke isn't getting stale (*'sorry Checkers'she says unrepentantly*), it occurs to me that we should find something new to, er, gently prod at Checkers with.

Well, I didn't do an intro post, either, and I can't be a BNF-- I'm stealthy.

Though, er, it occurs to me that I could be considerably more stealthy if I stopped blathering about goats, underwear, zucchini, and other odd things.

Checkers, you are lucky i even saw this! stick icons on my lj *swings arms around in a traffic sign kinda way* or i'll never see them. that and a banner of Gen with "I CAN READ WHATEVER I WANT" will be a good thursday project for me :)

um... the first picture that comes up under his name on google is... uh... frightening

Oh look, it's the Magus and Gen. (http://www.cinematographers.nl/GreatDoPh/Films/NameOTRose.jpg)

1) I usually don't prefer Sean Connery in his younger days, but uh...*wanders off to perform official court duties*
2) *switches gaze and continues performing duties*
3) GAH ONE OF THESE DAYS i.e. this summer I will read that book and then watch the movie. I think it's more Sophos than Gen, though. XD

Sure, "work." (I dunno, it takes a lot of effort to ogle that first picture without being too terribly noticable... :-b)

Actually, I was surprised that a public library system as big as mine only had one copy of each. I had to have them sent to my branch, which almost ALWAYS has what I want.

Date: 5/2/07 06:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com
*unable, not able.

My library system back home is notoriously bad with series, but I don't think they had either book, which was alarming.

Sean Connery wouldn't make a bad Magus actually. I agree - the third one's more Sophos.

Welcome to Sounis. Yay for another fan living on this side of the Atlantic. Do you mind if I ask which list it was that recommended the book? And I agree - they make wonderful comfort books.

Interesting thoughts - I'd never pictured the Magus as Sean Connery before, but it seems to fit very well!

And I am jealouse that you are in ireland I want to go there sooo badly.
Anyway I am impressed you could get your friends to read the books. My friends just laugh at my obsession, though I am still working on them.
So awsomely happy for you to be here!!
