I was thinking of making more Queen's Thief icons, but I really wanted to use pictures of the characters (ala Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter), so I thought: why not cast out own people to play the characters in the books. So, here are the first people that popped into my mind:

Eugenides: Cillian Murphy (He's not perfect physically, but he's an amazing actor.)
Image hosting by Photobucket

Attolia: Angelina Jolie (She was probably my first thought because she was in Alexander, but doesn't she *look* perfect. She's a passable actor too, so perhaps she could pull it off?)
Image hosting by Photobucket

Eddis: Rosie O'Donnell (Perhaps it's because you don't see a lot of "unattractive" women in Hollywood, and I certainly don't think Rosie O'Donnell is unattractive, but Rosie's got a more real, less diva quality.)
Image hosting by Photobucket

That's all I got for now.

*Please* add your own ideas. We still have tons of characters that we could cast. And, if you think my people suck and you've got way better ones, post that too!

Nice idea. :D

I like the guy you cast for Eugenides. I've never seen his acting before, that I can remember, but he doesn't look too different from the way Gen's described in the books. I can't really think of anyone else, it's hard to think of good actors who are also short and have slightly dark skin. I'm not clued up on Spanish or Italian actors. :)

For Attolia, I'm afraid something rebels in me against the thought of Angelina Jolie playing such a wonderful role. Liv Tyler perhaps, but she seems too young. That's a difficult one.

As for Eddis, it's the same problem as with Gen. Someone even shorter than Gen, with broad shoulders, and dark skin. I suppose a broken nose could be faked. :) Perhaps Jennifer Ehle ( http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=Jennifer+Ehle )? Though I agree, Rosie O'Donnell does have a more real quality.

Oh! I just thought of my most likely Gen. Johnny Depp. He's a fantastic actor, can play a huge variety of roles and is usually fairly different in each, and has fairly similar looks. Perhaps a little too tall.

I think Benedict Cumberbatch ( http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=Benedict+Cumberbatch ) would make an excellent Sophos. Hmm, must think about who to cast as the Magus.

I've had a thought, perhaps it'd be better to cast less well known people? That way there're no negative associations when people look at your icons.

But seriously, fantastic idea. :)

Cillian Murphy. I love him as an actor, and actually, when i think about it, he'd be really good. But i can't get the idea of him being the Scarecrow out of my head. He was the best villian ever!

But i was just trying to think of people myself, and i can't think of anyone. No one fits what i think they are like.

Isn't Attolia supposed to fair-skinned and golden-haired, though? I could've sworn she was. So maybe Miranda Otto or something along those lines.

Eddis...isn't she supposed to be kind of small and tomboy-ish? Maybe Kristen Stewart (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0829576/)? And I randomly found this (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0386645/) girl, who sort-of-kind-of-maybe looks Eddis-ish.

As for Gen...hmm, I DO like Cillian, but I sort of figured Gen would look a bit different. Kind of like a younger David Tennant....

Really, though, I think it's all a question of how people imagine the characters...

Hahaha!

During the chat I suggested Orlando as Gen (I know-too tall) and immediately got stomped on by all. Now I'm a bit gun-shy.

Attolia is fair skinned with black hair, but hair can be dyed. I guess the main point is that she should be naturally very very beautiful. In keeping with the Roman ideas of beauty perhaps?

Eddis is meant to be small and tomboy-ish, but it's hard to find someone in their twenties who looks like that. The second person you found was good I thought. :)

David Tennant! The only problem is that Gen's meant to have slightly dark skin, which David, however lovely he is, ostensibly does not have.

But I guess you're right, it's entirely a personal interpretation. That's the problem with films, they never adapt entirely to your images.

*grins* Ouch. Give us your ideas for someone like the Magus, who should be easier to cast. Or even Ambiades or Costis or Pol.

Is she? God, it really has been ages since I've read the books. *mentally beats self* But, again, hair can be dyed.

Dammit, David, tan!

:) Have you read KoA yet? But yes, I guess it's more about the basics in terms of appearance than things which can be easily changed.

*wholeheartedly agrees on the subject of David*

But then that could be a problem in the scenes where Gen has to look like a dark skinned person who's become very pale. :D Just to nitpick. *pokes self*

I think Cillian Murphy's great for Gen. He has the look of a bit of slyness, yet openness, and mischievousness...

Being the resident Attolia fan, I'm a bit reluctant to cast Angelina Jolie-- she's a little too earthly/sensual-looking for my image of Irene (who, for all her bloody history, is a neophyte in the ways of men). Also, in QoA, there's a passage where she's supposed to look like the goddess Hephestia (intentionally on her part).

How about Natalie Portman? (Although in KoA, we find she's taller than Gen, and I'm fairly sure Natalie Portman's rather short). I dunno how to embed a pic, so here's a link: http://www.celebsmedia.ru/names/p/portman_n/show_eng.shtml?portman43.jpg
http://www.celebsmedia.ru/movies/s/starwars2/show_eng.html?sw2_06.jpg
(the second one's from Star Wars II, where she plays another young queen).

Plus, Natalie Portman's good at giving off the young vibe that Angelina lacks (definitely worldly, that one).

As for Eddis, I don't really see her as ugly or anything. She's supposedly homely and stocky, but charismatic. Something like a younger Janeane Garofalo? Any other thoughts?

And I know I'm jumping the gun here, but I think a perfect Elestra (the daughter, not the Princess of Renseleaus) would be Julia Stiles. The description in Beauty reads face like a platter, body like a stick, or somesuch. Not that I think Julia Stiles should be described so unflatteringly, but I can see how someone with her bone structure and figure would feel awkward at a younger age. Plus, she exudes character and interesting-ness-- which is what was so interesting to Flauvic, no?

Natalie Portman's a great idea for Attolia. The only thing is, she might be a little too young?

If you're talking about Elestra from the Sherwood Smith books (fellow fan) I agree, Julia Stiles would make a perfect model.

Really? I'd have seen Ian McKellan more as the Magus. Though the Magus in my mind has a broader face and longer hair than he does.

Casanova was fantastic, I loved that show. He's in Doctor Who now. But I think it was [livejournal.com profile] waterandfire who suggested him initially.

Good point with Eddis though. The trouble is finding an a broad shouldered short actress with a broken nose and curly black hair. You could just try doing a search for original people on google for those features to see what comes up. :) Nick some poor person's photo.

With Angelina, that picture just seemed a little too Hollywood for me. I didn't get the impression of a cold, majestic monarch, I got an actress wearing too much makeup. But you're right, the pose and dress are very Attolia.

Oh, I've just had a thought. There was recently a production on the BBC called 'Rome'. You could check out the cast and crew page:

http://www.hbo.com/rome/cast/

for anyone you think'd be a suitable character. They're all in roman dress and constume, which is kind of similar (well, not really) to the dress in the books. Actually, the clothes used in productions like Casanova seem more likely (considering the descriptions of silk coats with bell sleeves).

Actually, just considering casanova, there's a particular actress who at one point passes for a man. She's slightly similar to Eddis in looks:

http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=Nina+Sosanya

She seems the most likely candidate for Eddis.

No way, dude. Sam Neill totally means business and would smack anyone with a riding crop. Especially dinosaurs.

Yes, it's another fandom. I didn't explain quite clearly; See above comment to/from rowana. Btb, you should look into Crown and Court Duel (by Sherwood Smith). It's less sophisticated than QoA and KoA, but the court intrigue and brave characters are all there!

I can't really see Angelina Jolie as Attolia for several reasons. One of them is that I think of her as an action heroine, and Attolia, wonderful as she is, is not that. She's got enough personality to have half her court in love with her and in fear of her, but she's not a warrior. Anyway, Attolia is always being ‘thin-lipped’, which might be difficult for Jolie.

I think we should go for lesser known actors... ones that can't immediately be associated with some Hollywood Blockbuster.

The actor who played Eugenides would have to be incredibly talented, not to mention young and very short. It would help if he could juggle three things with one hand. Maybe you could find some Greek child prodigy to play him.

hmmm...wouldn't Angelina Jolie be a little too old? I pictured Attolia as being in her early 20s and Angelina could never pass for that age--regardless of how much plastic surgery she has had done. hehehe :)

I agree with the person who suggested Natalie Portman. She's an excellent actress and would be able to carry that role well.

As for Eugenides...hmmm...now, that's a hard one! I would suggest a young Johnny Depp, simply because I used to be obsessed with him and he has that dark coloring, but I really don't know. I'll have to think about it some more.

I do love that pic of Cillian Murphy. That was from The Girl with a Pearl Earring, right?

She's not stocky, but she does have a nose and isn't beautiful in any way. Darken her hair a bit, and she might work:

Sara Gilbert (of Roseanne and Twins): http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/2511/Events/2511/SaraGilber_Grani_2975529_400.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Gilbert,%20Sara%20(I)

Oooooh, good choice. And after seeing Alfie, I can definitely see the slightly skeevy/sexy vibe that I've always imagined the beautiful Flower to exude.

We'd have to lighten his hair to be truly golden, but it could definitely be done!

Another Attolia prospect...

She's getting a little old for the role, but Monica Belluci in her prime can convey both frightening power and coldness with beauty and grace:

*laughs* They're never, ever, going to find an actor specific enough to play Gen. Ever. If ever a movie was done, it'd have to be in computor animation.

You know what's funny -- whenever I re-read "Court Duel" and "Beauty" it makes me crave the Thief books. I always pictured Eugenides crossing over to Meliara's world (not in the romantic sense -- just as a nice contrast to Mel's experience with the typical courtiers, and of course to make Shevreath jealous).

It may be because I first read the books around the same time. But still I sort of imagine Eddis, Sounis and Attolia to be a serperate continent but still in the same world as Sherwood SMith's Atharel, Tlanth, and Renselaus (sp?)...

I think the reference to Attolia being "thin-lipped" is her habit of pressing her lips together when she is trying not to laugh...or when she's trying to hold her temper.

From: [identity profile] cyberskiver.livejournal.com
That's what I think too. But could Angelina Jolie even do that?
The actress playing Attolia should not necessarily have thin lips. Just normal sized lips.
