I'm rereading QofA for the millionth time, and stumbled on a question (as I usually do--it's why these books are so rich and lovely--they never stop giving, no matter how many times you read them).

You know that iconic scene from chapter 9, where Eddis arranges for a picnic on the mountain with Eugenedes and the Magus? It's an opportunity to send multiple messages to Sounis and Attolia (1. It was the Eddisians who stole the Magus and 2. To suggest something amorous between Eddis and Eugenedes).

For the entire picnic, Eugenedes is in a sour mood. On my previous reads, I didn't think much of it  because he was so often moody (and understandably so, considering all the trauma and ptsd and general mass of emotions). But Eddis seems to emphasize that she "knew the Magus wondered at [Gen's] bad temper." And, then, in the very next line, she explains: "We are sending a message to the QUeen of Attolia [about a supposed love affair between them]."

Is Eugenedes in a bad mood because he loves Attolia and doesn't want to send that message?

I'm asking because all the other reasons  (like being considered useless etc, and having to live with the reputation that he creates for himself) are discussed much earlier in the passage and therefore not seemingly relevant....

So I was re-reading The Thief (fanfic exchange reasons ... wouldn't you like to know?!?) and came across the section at the end where the Magus describes Gen's sword fight.
...The minister of war snorted. The Magus didn't recognise this as high praise, and he said stiffly: "I've been told his father wanted him to be a soldier. I'd be happy to inform his father that he has a son to be proud of."
Had he really not figured who he was talking to, as Gen assumes? Or is this a clever comment on the Magus' part, to praise Gen in a way his father can't just brush aside?

Then I got a bit further on:
"Tell me," I said, "or I'll get up and strangle you with one hand."
Ouch.

My daughter is re-reading ACoK, and ran across this hilarious image, which I don't remember noticing before. It's on p.155, when Eddis is about to tell Sophos the story of Polystrictes. Sophos turns back to look at the Magus, who is described as "far behind them, walking with one of Eddis's attendants on one arm and one of Attolia's on the other."

Glad to see the Magus is enjoying himself! And I have to wonder if the Attolian attendant is the romantic but foolish Chloe? (since we see in KoA that she is an attendant again). Anyway, the image of the Magus strolling along arm in arm with the ladies (of both courts, no less) has been making me laugh all day.

And we've reached the end! Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen for coordinating.

This week's discussion covers chapters 10 through the end, from "When I woke, the sun was up and the day was already warm." to " 'Thank you, thief.' 'You're welcome, my queen.' "

That is, I believe, the first time we hear anyone addressed directly as "My queen." It certainly isn't the last. :)

There's so much to cover here! Gen stealing the Gift a second time; more interference from the gods; Ambiades' and Pol's deaths; an introduction to the queens of Attolia and Eddis; and of course the revelations of Ambiades' treachery and Eugenides' true identity and motives.

I'm going to try something a little different with this post. I'll start a few threads in the comments, each with its own topic, which will hopefully seed the discussion in different directions! Feel free to respond to each of those if the topic interests you, or reply to this post and start your own.

For the third week of The Thief read-along, we’re covering chapters 7 to 9, from “Good feelings persisted between myself and the Magus until the next morning...” to “Darkness that was deeper than the river swallowed me up.”

They’re some pretty exciting chapters, as we finally get to see Gen ‘in action’ professionally, as it were, rather than just active in driving the Magus nuts, baiting the Uselesses and generally pursuing his own agenda :)Chapters 7-9 discussion )

Welcome to the second part of the anniversary read-along of The Thief! This week's read-along is chapters 4-6. It starts with the sentence "WE STOPPED AGAIN EARLY IN the evening." and ends with "Did he sound genuinely flattered?" I'm not going to give page numbers because I have an ebook version, but my discussion's mostly chronological and I'll give quotes.

Like all the readalongs - SPOILERS! I'll also talk a little bit about the other books, so be wary if you haven't read them yet.

Chapters 4-6 discussion )

Stay tuned for the next instalment next week, hosted by [livejournal.com profile] an_english_girl, for chapters 7-9!

Long before he embodied Severus Snape in Harry Potter, my tiny 6-year-old heart was majorly crushed and forever shaped by his portrayal of Colonel Brandon in Sense & Sensibility. (My family teased me about this for years.) (Also, one of our dogs may or may not be named Brandon because of it.) Alas, this dashes any hopes I might've had for one day seeing him cast as our beloved Magus, but he'll live on as such in my imagination.

I'm so very sad. What a legend. RIP, Alan Rickman. <3

Excerpt from CoK:

Sounis turned to the magus. "Did you know?"

"That he was relentless?" The magus finished his question. "Yes. That he had this in mind, no. I did not realize that he disliked the ambassador so much."

"Melheret has a reputation as one of the best swordsmen in the Mede court," a soldier informed them, having overheard. "They say he trained the former ambassador, Nahuseresh."

"Ah," said the magus, understanding at once. "I see that he means to be prepared if he meets him again."

"Surely that's unlikely," said Sounis.

"I don't think unlikely means to him what it does to the rest of us," said the magus.

Sorry magus, I'm starting to agree with Sophos.

Let's do some math, folks!

Five years later: QoA 2001
Five years later: KoA 2006
Four years later: CoK 2010

As of yesterday, it has been five years since CoK was released. I think we're due.

Yet, no news. Interviews from MWT have dwindled. Sounis has grown quiet. The majority of posts by its members tend to be about other fandoms, or asking for reading suggestions.  Because we have NOTHING to read.

Will Eugenides ever get his revenge? #watchoutpointybeard #swordskillz

Will the Eddisians escape the sacred mountain in time? #ohnolava #zipcodechange

Will we ever find out why the woman in the kitchen still includes sand in certain recipes?  #what'swrongwiththegravy #i'mnothungry

Is the poor elephant doomed to wait ten years before he is stolen from a nameless intimidator? #impatientpachyderm #omghowcanistealthat

Will I ever break this cycle of despair when I read those fatal words, "'You gave me the gun.' They both laughed." and realize I just finished the book, with nothing new in sight? #whatnow

I know, I know. Stop whining and go to bed.

Yes, that is a terrible title, and no, I couldn't think of a better one. (But I'll take suggestions.)

Lately I've been thinking about father figures in fiction. And, in the ongoing quest to discuss every single aspect of the Queen's Thief series, I naturally turned the focus of these thinkings onto Gen and company.

I am your father. )

Question: do you think Gen deduced that the magus would look for Hamiathes's Gift and deliberately landed himself on the magus's radar as a result? His narration midway through The Thief - when he expresses surprise that the man he bragged to in the wineshop ("I can steal anything") was an agent of the magus - seems to suggest otherwise, but I'm not sure I trust his narration. He might have been acting surprised so the magus wouldn't guess who he was. Unless that's altogether too great a risk, even for the master of foolhardy plans?

I want Attoliamore.

3D-images!  Backstories about people and places!  Interactive roleplaying!  Collecting hidden treasures!  I want all this about GEN.

I've been imagining what Attoliamore would look like.  A girl can dream, right?  What would you most like to see in Attoliamore?  Whose backstory?  What places would you like to visit?  What scenes should be reenacted?

Hi, I've been lurking here for over a year, ever since I found this site as I was reading the QT books.  It's great to find a community devoted to discussing these great characters, and includes book reccomendations.

My favorite book is definetly The King of Attolia!  It makes me laugh through the entire book, even scenes that have no right to be funny, (like immediately following the assasination attempt!)

I come bearing a discussion topic:  Who is the QT character that you absolutly love to hate?  (Sorry, Medes are excluded, we all know they are nothing more than slimy worms and don't even deserve the dignity of a comment in their honor!)
[identity profile] velvetrose09.livejournal.com

In the very first scene of CoK's when Gen comes down to the prison to meet the Magus and Sophos, Sophos smiles at Gen, but the Magus goes out of his way and steps infront of Sophos to greet Gen first.

Why?

At first I thought it was because he was so excited to see Gen. But then I had some after thoughts...
was he protecting Sophos? Maybe he wasn't sure what would happen if Gen didn't recognize him? Or was he surprising Gen?

[identity profile] creative-lefty2.livejournal.com
So, rereading Conspiracy of Kings, I came to the scene where Sophos is making his official oath to Gen. Just prior to that it is mentioned that the Magus is with him (296). I thought the Magus stayed behind with the army while Sophos and his dad (who needs a name) raced off with a couple of solders for a family reunion. It seems like it would have been mentioned sooner if the Magus had been with them the entire time. It is almost as if he is randomly inserted into the scene as to elicit the proper facial response from Eddis.

So, did Sophos pack the Magus in a bag (that was my dad's suggestion) or was he just trailing along behind whining "You can't leave behind your most trusted adviser!"
[identity profile] vega-ofthe-lyre.livejournal.com
Okay, I have some thoughts on this infamous, much-discussed scene from QoA, the discussion Eddis, Gen, and the Magus have during their picnic in the valley:

"Yes, I didn't know you had an interest in botany," said Eddis.

"I don't really. I have a friend who does. He isn't well enough to travel and relies on acquaintances to send him samples and drawings. And how is your war progressing?" he asked, declining to be sidetracked by scholarly inquiry.

So, like most of you, my first thought was that he was referring to Sophos. Sophos is smart, Sophos was shoved off on that island at the time, Sophos likes botanical classification. Sure! That works. But, when reading ACoK, I didn't see any reference that would definitively solve the question for us in this direction, and when I reread QoA this time, I was struck by a new thought:

What if his correspondent is the Emperor of the Medes? Sorry, his name is escaping me at the moment, but hey: he is (apart from Eugenides) the only character that we know of who has been mentioned prominently as being persistently ill throughout the books - he of the Tethys' Lesions. He lives far enough away that the samples and drawings have to be sent to him, not brought personally by the magus. We already know that national loyalties don't mean a whole lot to the magus - he cultivates friends and allies from many different countries. We don't know much about the Emperor personally, we don't know if he's of a scholarly bent, but... it's a thought. Of course, the ramifications  are immense, and I'm inclined to look askance at my beloved Magus and his political alignment because of this.

Any thoughts?

(And if anyone's already theorised on this before, sorry, not trying to steal your thunder! I looked through all the relevant tags and didn't see it in any of the discussions on the topic. Just want to know what you guys think!)

Hello my fellow darling reprobates!
I just think this is too funny, and I had to share it with you.

I have cajoled my new housemate into reading The Thief (he says he never read much as a kid, so I started him on a regiment of The Chronicles of Narnia, but one day I didn't have the next book so to sustain him I loaned him TT) and he seems to really like it! Last time I excitedly asked him, he was halfway through, where they were going into "that other country" and "the Magus dude" is talking about the gift. :D

What I find hilarious, though, is that he is visualizing the characters as the characters from the Disney "Aladdin." The Magus is Jafar, Gen is Aladdin, and "the Pol guy" is that big burly guard. Sounis, fortunately, is not the sultan.

I wonder what will happen once he meets Attolia...a translucent silk bikini, perhaps? Hummmm....

Gigglingly,
Mortalasabee
