Another topic to bring up. Just randomly. At the end of the book, Teleus called Gen an Annux; meaning King of Kings. Does this mean, Gen will one day be ruler of more than just Attolia, say like Eddis and Sounis? It seems to be a self-fullfilling prophesy. To add to this point, when Eddis mentioned that Theives never swear allegiance to the Ruler, just the country. Couldn't Gen see that the best way to protect Eddis, the country, is to have all three kingdoms united? That's pretty crazy, but i wouldn't be surprised if it did happen.

I supposed from that comment that Gen would take over Mede. I can't imagine him being the king of Eddis and Sounis, but I suppose it's a possibility.

What I thought might happen is that eventually Eddis will be destroyed in the volcano. Gen and Irene will rule Attolia and Helen and Sophos will rule Sounis. How neat and tidy! But that was some major foreshadowing at the end of KoA, that Eugenides may rule more than just Attolia.

Yes, and also didn't Helen say that she doubted the volcano was going to explode in their lifetimes?

Where did she say that? Combined those two statements definitely seam to be foreshadowing.

At the end of QoA. She says she's seen it in her dreams, and Gen says something like 'do you think it'll happen?', and she says 'Not in our lifetimes, perhaps'.

It's pretty sad that I know parts of the book off by heart. :)

No, it's not sad at all. All the good lines stick there anyway.

I'm not entirely sure. Sounis may be an option. Perhaps in saying 'King of Kings' they just meant that he will rule over ther kings, in another sense maybe?

No, that's not right. I've got no idea, given the political situation, I don't see how Gen could ever rule over more than Attolia. He's probably something like 17th in line to the throne of Eddis though. So if all of them die (but we don't want that to happen!)

And I'm pretty sure that Gen would see the best way to protect Eddis as having all three countries united - it's the same with the Magus of Sounis and Helen. They all know that to defeat the Mede, they'll have to be united.

Though i still don't know what to make of the historical taboo in Eddis about talking about the Thief.

You know, I really hadn't thought about that. Why was that scene in the book? It has to mean something. Why wouldn't they talk about the thief?

Do you think that, now that Gen is gone, Eddis will replace him with another? I seem to remember Attolia saying in QoA that they might get one of his sisters' children to be thief if Gen could no longer do it.

Must re-read...

I remember this , and it could probably happen too, because its really unlikely that Gen's children with their half-Attolian royal blood could become Eddis' theif.

I don't know why the Eddisians never mention the theif either. Also, there was a part in the Q0a that said that title of Theif of Eddis was dormant for quite some time before Gen decided he wanted it. So maybe it would just fade away.

And about Gen ruling all three countries, I totally agree with fabricalchemist, waaay too much responsibility! And I kind of like the idea of Eddis Sounis and Attolia remaining distinct. I mean, they founght so hard in the past to maintain their distinctions and seperate way of life. They don't need to be some sort of super-country to resist the Medes, do they? It would be enough that their allied.

I think the King of Kings bit was probably more about the fight with the Medes. I dunno, maybe Gen leads some sort of coalition with the neighbouring countries to fight them back? Because there were two new countries mentioned in the book: Ferria , (where Dite was sent) and Maygmar (or something to that effect, I can't find it in the book now)
So Gen could be King of Kings in the sense that he commands the Kings(or queens) of these countries. Kind of like Agmemnon in the Illiad (and Troy); he was the High King in charge of the other kings (like Odydesus) but the others ruled their own countries.
