There I was, innocently posting bad poetry in Chatzy as I celebrated finally finishing giving library orientation, and Rowana told me to post it to Sounis.

So: Join me in writing poems to Gen! To get you started, here is

Eugenides! Eugenides!
Delightfully designed to please
He'd charm the birds out of the trees!

His sufferings rouse our sympathies
But let's face facts; it's true that he's
Annoying as a hive of bees.

We love him for his wicked wit
Sheeplike baas and just a bit
Of gallows humor mixed with it.

A King who plays the bungling fool
Whom others think to make their tool
Who grudgingly is forced to rule.

The Queen can't love him more than we;
We wallow in books one, two, three;
Anticipate the fourth with glee.

Oh, Gen, my darling, Gen, my sweet
I simply worship at your feet!
Do tell me, when shall we two meet?

Okay, you aren't really real
But what the heck; the way I feel
That really isn't a big deal.

My fondness for you's wide and deep;
You make my poor heart dance and leap;
Oh, yes, I love you quite a heap!

I love it! :) Especially the line about being as annoying as a hive of bees.

Oh, this is so unfair! My co-workers were certainly wondering why I had tears in my eyes and was biting my lip painfully while looking at the computer screen this afternoon.

Annoying as a hive of bees. Yes!

The Queen can't love him more than we;
We wallow in books one, two, three;
Anticipate the fourth with glee.
Definitely!

I had some terrible Gen haiku somewhere, I'll have to go look for them.

Eugenides the Theif
Teases and captures the
Hand of a queen.

Sinistradextrously
Stealing and spying, he's
Theif, King, and gentleman,
Maker of schemes.

(and damned attractive with it)

And if you don't know about double dactyls...prepare to be edified. http://www.stinky.com/dactyl/dactyl.html

Eugenides, Eugenides
don't you know that he's
the one-handed goat foot
we all adore

Eugenides, Eugenides
smarter than all the Medes
we've only got three books
but we want four. (and more!)

There's a reason I'm a painter, not a poet.

Oh, right. How could I forget?

I went and read about double dactyls. Very cool.

Sinistradextrously

Now this one. I know sinister in latin is on the left. Dexterous in English means skillful and competent with the hands (though in latin it means right side). Is the word your own invention? I couldn't find a definition for it anywhere.

I believe it means left-handed.

Sorry, just throwing my two-cents in randomly ...

*snickers*
Yep, I cobbled that one together (from latin for left and for competant with the hands, like you said) when I realized there was not, in fact, a six-syllable double dactyl sprung word meaning "left-handed".

I didn't realize that dext- was the latin for right, though. So it's sort of "left-right-handed" which wasn't quite what I was going for. Whoops.

Crap. Now I'll have to think up a better one.

OOOH! love it!!!!! Gotta type this before your delightful meter rubs it out completely from my brain...

I named my slim, dark iPod "Gen".
It seemed a good idea back then.
But since, I've learned the price to pay:
I've lost an earring yesterday.

no! That was grrrrrrreat!

Painter AND poet sounds much better anyway, right??

Really did. If anyone finds a long, brown, tigers'-eye-lookalike earring...
Gen, fess up.

I agree. Most people think of dexterous as meaning good with their hand(s). It works. I wouldn't have known it had the latin root for "right" if I hadn't gone poking around. Poor lefties. Even latin is against them.

Not a leftie myself, but I'll support you against arrant prejudice...silly Romans. What have they ever done for us, anyway?

*grins* Look what Gen can do with only a left hand.

Wow, you're right - the meter really is delightful (meter is the reason I try to avoid writing poetry; I'm terrible at scanning and springing lines). And it's a funny little poem.

Nicely done!

I am left handed, and the world is very prejudiced against us.You know those chairs that have the desktop thingies you can lift up? They're always on the right. And scissors have to be manipulated in odd ways... and even the mouses (mice? whatever) for computers--always on the right side!

Loved it! I'm glad to hear that others are dangerously infatuated with our sinistradextrous Gen.

By the way, I think 'sinistradextrous' may work after all - don't give up hope - after all, he's ambidextrous, so the adjacent placement works...plus, seriously, it's such a Gen word. I think he'd like it; it's a paradox.
