I have a horrid feeling I haven't introduced myself to this wonderful community, though I know I've commented. Sorry! Bad form.

I'm Maggie; I live just north of London, England; and according to my birth certificate I'm 53, though I'm sure I was 21 only a handful of years ago...

I only recently discovered the stories about Eugenides. When I finished them the first time through I was going to lend them to my daughter, but I decided to be selfish and I'm now re-reading them all!

Welcome! You may as well resign yourself to simply getting a 2nd set of the books, and using those as loaner copies.

Lucky you, living near London and having the chance to meet up with Megan et al. over the Christmas holidays!

Evening? Its only afternoon over here. ;)

I second the recommendation for getting a second set of books... since I'm poor AND selfish, I just tell all my friends they have to get them from the library.

Speaking of re-reading... started a re-read of QoA last night. So fun. Big trap. I'm supposed to be doing homework! Stupid homework....

The library? I tell all of my friends to buy them!

I never buy a book--well, very rarely--that I haven't already read and know I'll want to read again and again (and again and again and again and again...). Most of my friends are the same. And, while the books are AWESOMELY AMAZING, they're not for everyone (well, *I* think they are, while I know they're not, if that makes sense) so library first, then bookstore is just the way I think.

But then, me and my friends are mostly all poor college students who are living on ramen noodles (well, not really, but you know what I mean) and are too cheap to just go buy books we don't already love.... :)

The friends to whom I recommend the series are people who have very similar tastes in literature as me. So if I give them a rec, they're usually guaranteed to like it, and vice-versa.

I, too, am a poor college student. Without a job. And I'm still buying books without knowing whether or not I'll like them.

*shrug* Well, I'm just a fan of libraries, I guess. And a bit miserly. :) And perhaps I've been told far too many times that I don't NEED to buy the books, I have way too many already, and besides, thats what libraries are for (though that is only half true. I don't have NEARLY enough books, but yes, that IS what libraries are for!)

Oh, I love libraries. I want to be a librarian. But I also think library books are kind of like prostitutes, and if my books are going to be abused, I'm the one who's going to abuse them.

I've worked in a library. We would get back all sorts of books that were sticky and had odd-colored stains caused by I-don't-want-to-know-what.

I would probably have done better to give you the complete set that I gave to my college-student niece last Christmas and which to my knowledge she still hasn't read. Garrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Nor has my high-school aged nephew read The Thief, also a present.

What checkers65477 said... I think. My name is Mark ("thnidu" is a long story). I'm (count on fingers) 5 years older than Maggie, and I've been an sf/fantasy fan most of my life. I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. I haven't been active in this group lately and probably won't be, 'cause of too much Real Lifeā„¢ busyness. But the group is on my f-list and I enjoy seeing what other people have to say.

Not at all. Hey, I'm pretty psyched to learn that I'm not the absolute oldest one here, at 46.

Welcome!
I know what you mean about lending them out. I'm having a hard time lending them to my mom, who only reads a few pages a night.

Hey, I forgot to comment here, which is terrible since I already picked you out on another thread. Welcome, officially. :) Yay for another Londoner in Sounis - I'm over in North West London.

I'm glad you enjoyed the books, and I hope you can make it to the meet up in December.
