So, partly inspired by a certain book talk, and the resulting discussion, I had been thinking about ways of twisting and using "real" pictures for Attolian purposes. So, icons:
Example:
Notes:
001. The picture is from Poussin's "Death of Germanicus." He actually was dying.
002. From Donato Creti's painting of Alexander the Great nearly being killed by his father.Obviously, it's the wrong hand -- but it's remarkably impossible to find paintings of left-handed swordsmen in classical dress. EDIT: Thanks to
kyaiah, now flipped so all the hands are right (er... left?).
003. From David's "Oath of the Horatii." But no self-respecting Attolian would hold a practice sword like that!
004. Is a Roman cage-cup, but I think Gen would insist on being poisoned with a pretty cup.
005. From a nineteenth-century children's book of stories from ancient Rome:Prince Valiant Manlius Torquatus orders his son executed for excessive bravery disobeying orders. Really, I don't know why he looks so silly, either. Obviously Gen' attendants were in top form, that day.
006. Also from a nineteenth-century children's book, this time of stories from Plutarch. This is actually Philopoemenon being poisoned in prison; in KoA context, it's much more cheerful.
007 & 008. It seems rather presumptuous to co-opt Michelangelo's sibyls, but here they are. 007 is the Delphic Sibyl, and 008 the Eritrean. I wanted to do Cumae, but I couldn't find a good way to crop it.
009. I like Lady Heiro a lot; here she is when she isn't picking out attractive earrings. The picture is from a vase depicting Sappho.
010. From an early manuscript of the Aeneid. Although Venus is usually nicer to Aeneas than the gods are to Gen.
011. Also from an early Aeneid mansucript: Dido and Aeneas in the cave. I included it mainly because he's really cute, and she looks a bit like Attolia (the right color dress, anyway).
