According to King, he has been abducted by the Sounisian rebels. Since they're losing the battle and haven't offered him up for ransom to Sounis yet, everyone assumes that our dear royal nephew is dead...

In my opinion--knowing Megan's habits with plot twists--the only thing that *couldn't* have happened is what everyone in the story thinks happened. So whodunnit?

Personally, considering all of the major characters' motives and means, the only two who I think are likely suspects are the King of Sounis himself... and of course, our stealthy main character.

The King of Sounis may or may not love his nephew... we don't know. But he does have reason to want Sophos out of the picture--in all likelihood, he knows that Eddis prefers Sophos as a marriage partner, and I wouldn't put it beneath Sounis to pretend that his own nephew had been kidnapped by rebels when really he had paid his own agents to smother him away from Letnos (his isle of internment, safely away from the magus's clutches) and hide him somewhere. Then, Eddis would *have* to marry him.

Now, Eugenides's motive would be to keep Sophos safe--from Sounis, from the Mede, whoever--but his means are unclear. He was in Attolia the entire time before Sophos's abduction.

Thoughts?

Sophos? He became a feared pirate king, natch.

/reference to old joke

That said, officially, I think Sophos is second in line to the throne? So I don't think Sounis would actually have him killed - especially as there don't appear to be a tone of heirs running around (that is, Sounis has no kids of his own to inherit).

All I know is that when I went to one of MWT's booksignings a couple years ago (after The King of Attolia came out), and I asked whether she was planning another book, and she just smiled and said, "Well, the Medes still have Sophos."

*crosses fingers that Sophos lives*

Poor Sophos. I doubt he's developed into a political mastermind since we last saw him in The Thief. Though it would be great fun if the next book were somewhat from Sophos's perspective, and Sophos had developed new skills. (I wonder if he still admires Gen, or if he hates him?)

wait wait wait, she SAID the Medes have Sophos? Because the book totally does not imply that. THIS IS CRUCIAL INFORMATION.

Did she really, definitely say this? Because I've thought that the Medes had him ever since I read KoA. My guess is that the people who kidnapped Sophos were somehow being controlled by the Medes. It is implied that the Medes really want to take over the land that includes Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis. Attolis and Eddis have already indicated that they want nothing to do with the Medes. That leaves poor Sophos as the means to an end.

Oh. Now I want the next part of the story.

Yes. She said that. I'm almost absolutely, definitely certain of that, and my sisters remember her saying that, too.

*hopes that she's not suddenly wrong*

I...always just thought he was kidnapped, BECAUSE I WAS LAZY AND DIDN'T SPEND TIME WORRYING ABOUT IT.

Serves me right.

I always comforted myself with some silly thoughts of him being kidnapped (for whatever reasons, though in this case, I go with Medes taking him for ransom/leverage) and then escaping on a pirate ship and somehow ending up in Attolia's palace and going, "Eugenides? King? No way!"

(This is assuming, since he was shipped off to the isles for "education," that his isolation included a complete lack of news of the war and the newly kinged thief. Especially because they were friends.)

Now, see, would that fit with Gen's reaction when he hears that the rebels haven't offered him up for ransom? Because I just don't think that he would go as - forgive me - Emo Moment as he does if he knew that Sophos was safe and sound. I support (And have always supported) the theory that the Medes have him and Gen somehow finds this out and sends a certain guardsman to rescue him. :P

I, however, know just where he is. He is currently on my bed waiting to be cuddled.

(Just FYI on that last bit I have a leopard plushy named Sophos, so... >.> Why yes I am a rabid fangirl, why do you ask?)

Woah, TMI on the last bit, dawn.
Yes, I agree with the Mede theory. Personally I think that Gen, Costis, and Eddis (dunno how - she just has to go) all go to Mede and rescue Sophos. Then Sophos and Eddis get married and have a daughter, because she's the subject of my totally nebulous fanfic!!! (yeess, I have come up with a fanfic about Eddis's daughter. My current teaser is: The Last Eddis, and her daughter, All That is Left of Eddis. I might write it down at some point, but right now I have no time. Curse you Christopher Polini, why oh why did your book have to be so long? and why did it have to come out right when Inkdeath did??)

well, I'm glad to hear that the sounisians have approved of Inkdeath. I haven't read it yet, but I'm in line at the library, and expect to be able to read it shortly. I jumped in line as soon as my library system made it possible.

I'm excited about the movie also, but I'm annoyed because it seems that they keep delaying the release! I can't keep track of when the movie will come out! >:-/

Any idea if it's out over here yet? I had a 30 minutes flick through the German copy about a week after it came out last December (by the way, Tintentod is such a better name) and I've been waiting waiting waiting.

They SAID it was going to be out in March here, but it didn't turn up. And even the Austrian paperback was 25 Euros.

i've always thought Sophos was with the Medes, and it would fit logically with a lot of predictions for the next book, but when has that ever mattered to MWT?

I just hope he's okay!

I've always thought Sophos was with the Medes, also. And they're going to bring him out as part of their plan.. maybe they want to make him sympathetic to them, depose Sounis and put the rightful heir who likes the Medes on he throne too.

But Gen and Costis will go and rescue him.

There have been several things in King that seem to suggest that Eugenides is going to do something serious about the Mede. His coaching Costis in the language and the fact that he wants revenge on Nahuseresh. It would make a delicious plot for Gen and Costis to go and rescue Sophos! I find it more likely that Gen goes to Medea and has a show down with Nahuseresh, then Nahuseresh returning to Attolia (after all he went thru to escape!).

I can see several reasons for the King of Sounis to arrange for Sophos to disappear. I've never considered the reason drashizu gives, but I think it sound legit. True, Sounis wouldn't be so stupid to have him killed, but I can see a motive for the disappearance.

However I can't see enough reasons for Gen to hide Sophos. Keeping Sophos safe is all well and good, but not very good book material...Besides, Gen was too busy keeping himself safe in King to do that kind of mischief.

Could Sophos be/have been in Ferria? Dite could root him out....
