I've loved The Thief and Queen of Attolia for years, but I didn't know there was a third book until it arrived with my birthday packages on Friday. I set it aside to wait until after I'd finished a major paper--and then finished the paper in record time and instantly turned to devour King of Attolia, because for a Eugenides book You Cannot Wait. I stayed up past 2 am reading, but every page was worth it.

I was a little worried at first, because of the unknown character POV and the introduction of Eugenides (whom I love) in quite a bad light--I kept wondering in the first few pages if the power had gone to his head. But by a few chapters in I was convinced that MWT is even more brilliant than I guessed. I fell in love with Eugenides all over again, and with Costis and Aristigon and Reilus and Teleus as well, and I even really liked the Queen, which I hadn't at all done in The Thief and which I'd struggled severely with in The Queen of Attolia. I think the thing that I really like, now that I'm older and have returned to that world with clearer eyes, is how utterly and unrepentently flawed the characters are. Attolia is ruthless, cruel, bad-tempered, and entirely too willing to hurt people who love her. Eugenides is vain, petty, occasionally vindictive, selfish, and quite a bit of a coward. We see him in all his bad lights at first, through Costis's eyes; and then, with Costis, we slowly begin to change our attitudes.

By midway through the book I was squealing just about every time Eugenides spoke. The man is brilliant (I LOVE it when characters are smarter than me), and witty, and oh so much love... His interactions with Aulus and Baogus probably constituted my favorite scene, although the assassination is nearly neck-and-neck in the running. Also, just about every time he spoke with Attolia, I whimpered with delight.

I'm desperately hoping there's a 4th book; I need to find out what happened to Sophos! But the Mede question was never really answered so I'm certain there will be; it's just a question of how long I'll have to wait...

Oh, and, um. Brand-new here, found this community this morning, and am already thrilled with how active and friendly it seems. I'm a writer, and though I can't promise fanfic, I've already got some ideas percolating. ^^;
