Introductions and some ponderings...
Feb. 22nd, 2009 03:45 pmHello everyone! I figured it was time to introduce myself as a fellow Queen's Thief fan. I recently stumbled across this community as I was hunting for Eugenides related stuff. Luckily for me that I did, since his place seems to be a wealth of helpful tidbits. I had no idea a 4th book was in the works until I stopped here! *whoops* Anyway, I apologize in advance for any postings I do hereafter...I am a terrible rambler and I can almost guarantee that I will always write too long.
I first read The Thief in middle school, and liked it so much that it was the first ever book that I bought for myself brand new from a bookstore (ah, the first steps towards amassing a library). It was on the $2.99 rack, the paperback edition with Gen taking the Gift from Hephestia's lap. Needless to say, that copy got well read. Anyway, I was in high school when I learned that there was a sequel. I immediately ordered it through inter-library loan, and I recall reading the first chapter eagerly when I was driving somewhere with my dad. It was so hard to hide my emotions when Eugenides lost his hand. The "God, no!" still haunts me. Let's see...ah, I was in college when I learned that KoA had been written, and I immediately ordered it online and then lurked in the college mailroom for days until it arrived. When it finally came in, I was in such a rush to get back to my dorm that I ended up crashing my bike into a car in the parking lot (we won't mention this again). I recently rebought The Thief and QoA in the newer additions with those beautiful covers...although it will forever bother me to have a matching set...that doesn't match because the first two are only in paperback. *sigh*
I am terrified that Hollywood will notice these books and attempt to turn them into awful movies (like it seems to do with all of my other favorite books). I hope to the gods of Eddis that this never, ever happens.....but every so often I ponder what it would be like if they DID. Who would you cast as Eugenides? I sort of keep an imaginary radar permanently switch on, scanning for a good prospect. So far, I seem to picture Gen as looking a lot like this guy named Deigo Luna. I have no idea what movie's he's been in, nor do I care. He just seems to LOOK right to me. Alas, I am a terrible artist or else I would draw him into Eddisian or Attolian garb. Anyone want to take a stab at it? This image reminds me the most of how I'd picture Eugenides. (And of course, if you think I'm completely left field with this comparison, do tell. I could be crazy.)

Date: 2/22/09 10:24 pm (UTC)I salute you, fellow awesome fan. *salutes*
I think that the books would never be picked up, actually. Too dark to be played up as kid films. Hollywood looks for Blockbusters, and awesome court intrigue isn't appealing to the masses anymore for some reason. :(
Picture's pretty good, but I think he would have darker skin.

Date: 2/22/09 10:39 pm (UTC)yes, as much as we are interested in seeing in a film, we defiantly have self-doubts.
I never imagine Gen to have dark dark skin; I only see that for the god. Pic's alright. Got the hair I think will suit.
oh and welcome!

Date: 2/22/09 11:57 pm (UTC)Don't think it'll ever be picked up by Hollywood because:
- hand-cutting
- the Attolia/Eugenides dynamics = not that kid-friendly
It'll be like turning George R.R. Martin novels into movies minus the incest and the homosexuality. (Wait! Half the plot is gone!)
But! In a wish-fulfillment world I'd want Ang Lee to direct it. Because his interpretation of Brokeback Mountain and Sense & Sensibility into the wide screen don't annoy me.
For Gen, I would say Skandar Keynes (wait a few years first) except that he's too pretty and light-skinned.
(Actually it's because he's the only recent male child actor that I actually like X_x;;)

Date: 2/23/09 03:56 am (UTC)I liked Diego Luna because he had a slightly darker skin tone (I think he's hispanic, not Mediterranean, but whatever) and darker eyes like I imagine Eugenides with. A sort of finely structured but not feminine face, a mischievous smirk, and that slightly curling dark hair. Hm...
welcome
Date: 2/23/09 07:08 pm (UTC)So far as actually making the movies? I think we'll just have to do this ourselves, fellow Sounisians, how about it? We are the only Reprobates who could possibly do them justice. We have plenty of members more than capable of producing, directing, casting, even acting I'll bet.
Rock on!

Date: 2/24/09 05:18 pm (UTC)I don't think he's that big actually. Just that one pic makes him look that way.... I know I saw a picture of him in a magazine next to a woman and he was shorter than her by a bit.
Anyways, I really liked his hair/eyes/grin, not his body. =p I just posted that pic because it showed his skin tone more than anything else I could find.

Date: 2/24/09 06:00 pm (UTC)I really think Lucilla from "Gladiator" reminds me of Attolia the most, but Eddis is a tough one. Where in Hollywood do they allow less-then-beautiful women with crooked noses? The closest we can shoot for is the wide smile. How about Bryce Dallas Howard:

I think it may have been LadyFox who came up with the idea and set up the imaginecasting stuff. Anyone else that post?

The Attolia entries are in the favorites section for that account, or linked above. :D
I think I have to be the one to add extra characters to the list to vote on, though, because I started it. I don't see an option to give the group account an admin status, either, so let me know which characters I missed and need to add and I'll get them on there!
But go ahead and vote in more actors! :D

Date: 2/25/09 04:10 am (UTC)For whatever reason, I imagine Sounisians to be white European-looking, Attolians to be olived-skinned Mediterranean, Medes to be brown near easterners, and Eddisons to be, uh, kind of mutts haha. Like Greekish or European features, but brown. I DUNNO OKAY.

Date: 2/25/09 04:20 am (UTC)Ironically, after I diss a dude in the comments for resembling Michael Jackson, I imdb Diego only to discover that he once played a Michael Jackson lookalike in a movie called Mister Lonely. Oh irony, you are so witty.

Date: 7/22/09 06:10 am (UTC)DIEGO LUNA IS SO HOT and I can't comment on him playing Gen, because my fangirlness would get in the way of logic. ....He would have to get rid of the Spanish accent, though.
