I've been lurking for about a month now and have finally decided to join in on the great discussions. I think one of my main questions is, did everyone else find it a complete shock in the first book when Gen turned out to be the Queen's thief of Eddis and had the gift? or was my brain turned off when I read that book because I'm normally not shocked like that (honest truth ;)) Also did anyone else enjoy the scene at the beginning of The Thief when the Magus says to Gen that they may one day attain a relationship of mutual respect and Gen thinks that he'll see gods walk on th earth first (on the re-read I got this of course)

I'm afraid I have a bad habit of (*ducks*) reading the last paragraph of books. Or I might've been shocked too. Although I think it was obvious that Gen was putting on a bit of an act. But I have to say I never caught the 2nd one. That's hysterical! I wonder what else I've missed? I know if I hang around here long enough all the smarties will catch me up...

Welcome!

I read Queen first so I knew Gen was the Thief, but was surprised when he had the gift. I know someone who caught that part, though, remembering how Gen said he liked to hide things in his hair.

I didn't get the mutual-respect-gods-walk-on-earth part until a reread. And didn't notice until a rereread the part where Sounis dumps out the gold and Gen says his uncle used to keep that much under his bed and count it every night? His uncle was Eddis, so that could have been true.

Looks like everyone else who was on chatzy decided to come over here too :-)
(emoticon for tiegirl)
(with a nose for Beatle)
(and the icon is for checkers XD)

Welcome to Sounis! I think your surprise at the end of the book was more to do with the unexpectedness of the ending, and how well the author hid it, than having your brain switched off.

But if we're talking about brains being switched off, *raises hand* GUILTY. The bit about seeing God walk the earth before attaining respect for the Magus? Thank you for pointing that out to me.
I did realise about the gold pieces, though. Whew, literary self-respect remains intact, just.

i always suspected there must be something more to Gen while reading, or why else are we reading about him, but was just the typical reader who follow along till at the end everything hit me like that. The Gift was a surprise. When i reread, all the clues jump out at me soo may times that indicated Gen as the Thief and all.

oh and Welcome!!

awesomeness.

The first time I read The Theif, I hated Gen at the end. "HOW DARE YOU! You're supposed to tell us these kinds of things...!"

But its so awesome in re-reads that I've forgiven him.

An hour or two ago I read the first chapter of The Thief to my roommate, who read Queen first and then I read her King. So she was laughing at all those kinds of lines, specifically the "mutual respect" one, knowing that comes true (I don't know how much she thought on the "gods walk on earth" part. We'll see how surprised she is...). "It's still the same old Gen!" she said. No, I thought. Actually, this is the original.

Ah yes . . .

I read The Thief for the first time so long ago that I don't really remember, although I'm sure I was completely shocked. I don't usually pick up on things like that. Hehe.
I DO love that line about respect though! I laughed out loud the first time I realized that and scared my friend who was sitting next to me.

Yeah. I was an IDIOT when I read TT. I, like tiegirl, read QoA first by accident (although I did NOT read the last paragraph first, how dare you!), so I knew he was the Thief already. However, as I mentioned earlier, I was an IDIOT and just sat there like an IDIOT wondering why in Hephestia's name he was suddenly from Sounis. I began to catch on... around when it became obvious. Like, the bridge. I got a hint of it when he was talking about wishing he was in bed with lots of books. Then it got to the end and I was like, oh. O_o
I did get the idea that he was putting on an act... but I was still an IDIOT.

Is the word IDIOT starting to sound strange to you?

Yes, I was completely shocked at the end of TT, in the best way. I love being surprised. And then I immediately started to re-read it and started seeing all the hints. The biggest most obvious hint is Gen's voice (his choice of words) -- he is clearly well educated. I love the line about "a relationship of mutual respect". I laughed so hard the second time I read it. My other favorite is a little later in the story, when the Magus is telling Gen that his name is short for Eugenides (as if he didn't know) and by the way, did you know the current Thief of Eddis is named Eugenides? Maybe you're related? An exalted distant cousin perhaps. Ha!
(I wish I could get my book out and quote it exactly but I loaned out all my copies (I have two each) of my QT books to my friend because her book club is reading them. I'm having withdrawls.)

That was an awesome quote. I myself loved the reference to the lions on the wall of Sounis as he passes under them, and that legend says they roar if a traitor passes beneath them. He then makes casual mention to their lack of roaring as he passes. Bwahaha.

My friend and I recently read it together, he for the first time. And there are so many moments when there's something said that I had to restrain my squeals about, because its foreshadowing that you don't know about.
*sighs at the awesomeness*

I have to admit, that I, too, cheated and knew the end before I got there, none the less, I still was pretty amazed and I turned right around and reread the whole thing because there were several places where I thought the MWT had cheated--but of course when I went back and carefully read those parts I found that it was all a careful dance with words.

MWT carefully tells the reader over and over that Eugenides is not what he seems and yet I kept forgetting as I raced along the plot line. In the very first pages I knew he was a well educated person, so he couldn't just be a street thief, and he tells us himself that he doesn't consider himself part of the "people" of Sounis. Who else but a well educated person could expound on the history of the agora, the prison, the megaron, the market, and the gods? And he says the "people" have forgotten this, clearly excluding himself from this catagory.
