Hi all! I've been helping out just a little bit with an online science fiction convention to be held this weekend, FlyCon 2009. As this community is full of people who love reading and fantasy, I thought I'd share, in case anybody else would be interested! Here's the main info on the convention:

Flycon 2009 is the first world wide online gathering for science fiction and fantasy-related writers, readers, artists, publishers, editors, and fans. It will be held over the weekend March 13th (starting midnight, Australian Eastern Standard Time) to Sunday 15th, with events happening round-the-clock. The con will be managed through Live Journal, with panels to be held in newsgroups on SFF.NET and author chats to be held in IRC. The con will not cost anyone more than a couple of hours of their time, and the normal costs associated with being online at their own computer. We have organized panels for horror/dark speculative fiction, science fiction & fantasy; workshops; an online masquerade ball; Dealers Room; and informal chat/forum lounges, plus chat hours for authors.

We are trying to draw writers, artists, and publishing industry people: agents, editors, publicists, small press, mainstream publishers, booksellers, etc, for panels and author chats, or to participate in the Dealers Room. Most of the panelist spots are nearly filled, but everyone (readers and fans included) can drop by the panels and participate. Panelists are just there to start things going, and then everyone talks, not just the panelists.

To find out more, check out our livejournal community, [livejournal.com profile] flycon2009. Also, the preliminary schedule for FlyCon 2009 (to be finalized tomorrow) has been posted.

It sounds like it'll be really interesting! Due to some family things that have cropped up, I won't be able to be there much, if at all, but the panel discussions should be accessible even after the con is over so I can go back and read what's gone on. Speaking of panels, here are some that I think could be interesting to people in this community, either because they're things we've talked about here, or they seem at least somewhat relevant to the Thief books:
  • When is Young Adult not really for Young Adults?
  • Banter: How much fun do you get out of it?
  • Recommend Me Something Good: Do recommendations work?
  • Evolution of online society, speculative-fiction-as-community
  • Fantasy and History: Historians who write fantasy
  • Historical fantasy
  • Families in fantasy
Anyway, come check it out! There should be some wonderful discussions going on between authors, readers, publishers, and editors!

Those panels look fascinating! Thanks for the notice, and the links.
