Dear Wonderful Author,

[livejournal.com profile] fabricalchemist, [livejournal.com profile] anon8, and myself had a lively discussion this morning about the Continental Powers. We seem to have a disagreement about who they are. Are they a seperate political identity that has been holding back the Mede from overtly invading our three favorite kingdoms? Or are Sounis, Attolia, and Eddis, themselves the Continental Powers?

Of course, everyone's opinion is welcome. And clarification from Megan would be especially delightful.

I thought Eddis, Attolia and Sounis were not part of the continental powers, but I'm not even sure why I think that.

I also thought they were a separate force some distance away... ^^

I had the impression that they were a seperate political identity who had made treaties with the Mede to the effect that invasion was a no no. They don't seem too bothered by Sounis, Attolia and Eddis, wasn't there a hint in QoA that the continental powers wouldn't do much to help if the Medes were invited into a war? Or perhaps couldn't do much to help in that case. :)

XD no, it was me who was gonna make the timeline. XP Though I was interested in seeing what other people drew! I might make a map if ambition hits... *dodges ambition*

In KofA, when the beat-up Attolian spies are brought in, right before the arrest of Relius. The heir to the Mede emperor claims that he'll keep denying that he's plotting an invasion if the Continential Powers suspect anything, and then he'll attack when he's ready, saying that the C.P. won't interfere/send help to Attolia anyway cuz they're too busy squabbling over their own affairs.

Which makes me think that Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis are like on one side of the continent and other countries are on the other side, with a peninsula (with Ferria and universities) somewhere in the middle.

There's also something about arbitration by the Court of Ten Nations in QofA, which I thought were or were part of the Continential Powers.

Ah yes, this makes sense. Ferria is the only other country we have by name isn't it? But there doesn't seen to be much diplomatic wrangling with them (or any other country) and Eddis/Attolia/Sounis. So that means there fairly isolated , I think.

Also, I think Eddis said in QOA that even if the CP does interefere , the conflict would still be fought on their turf, and they would do so for their own reasons. Eddis Attolia and Sounis would have to rely on skill more than numbers to defeat them; like plots and court intrigue and all the stuff Gen is so good at!
Great to be back!

Hmm. Maps are a touchy issue because my editor wants one and I won't give one to her. I like all the pretty colors and the little white topped mountains are cool, but Attolia, Eddis and Sounis are not on an island. You wouldn't be far off if you kept the Mediterranean in mind, with a different Attic peninsula.

But a map in the books would be so nice. *does puppy dog eyes* Not to get into touchy territory (Bear will yell at me again), but why have you not wanted to do one?

So, we know Eddis is landlocked, and Attolia and Sounis have coastlines. Would they be on a peninsula, with Eddis squished between? Is their area like where Athens is now? Or like Corinth with a small strip of land joining it to the continent?

Yes, I had to get an atlas out to find the Attic peninsula. Good thing I work in a library.

I don't want to put a map in for the same reason that I don't want it permanently recorded on a website that Phresine is a widow with no children. What if I change my mind and I have to slide the Capitol of the Mede Empire six hundred miles closer to a coast so that I can get a plot-moment to work in some future book? Gee whiz, I'll get to the map, really. I just have to work everything out first.

I think I might not be nearly as good at all this business as you all think I am. . .

Psht. Nonsense. Like Eddis, we all think you just might be able to walk on water and write circles around others. No pressure!

I was surprised that there wasn't a map in either the first or second books, considering the way the geography of the place is always being referred to. I love your map though CBjen, I always imagined the countries as an island too, and the Mede above them, and theContinental powers as somewhere off to the North West.

Ferria reminds me of Ferrara, which was an Italian county ruled by a Duke during the renaissance...Yes

Good point about the CPs, Eddis Attolia and Sounis really have to handle the Mede themselves.

How do you post a images? I was going to post a map of Greece. I thought Ferria sounded like Italy too. Or maybe Asia? I know the Greeks traded with Asia, but since I'm deplorable with geography I'm not quite sure what "Asia" actually consits of geographically.

Is Eddis, Sounis and Attolia all on Attica? Or is Sounis more near Sparta? Or is Mede Sparta? And the Continential Powers Turkey/Persia. Or is Mede in Persia? Argh, I'm awful at geography.

I too thought of Edd/Soun/Att as an island, but in KoA we find out the Attolia has sort of a Siberia type place were you can send annoying people. But she doesn't seem too worried about this border so I guess the land beyond it (real-life Europe?) is sort of like Alaska/Northwest Territories/Nunavit - since nobody acutally lives there, theres no need for a real border. Sort of like the Canada/Greenland border - where it is depends on what country you live in.

oh, and I was being sarcastic - people do live in Alaska/Nunavit/Northwest. There's even a walmart in Northwest.

You could save an image on photobucket and post the link. Or try copying and pasting it. :) I'm not very good at this. About Asia, I'm pretty sure that it starts where Eastern Europe ends, about Turkey, and keeps going to China. That's not very specific, sorry. And I think the Greeks traded mainly with northern Africa and India.

Perhaps. That's an interesting point actually, but I don't remember the reference to QoA, about the Siberia type place. :) Need to re-read.

I really did think of the Mede in about the same position/capacity as Persia (and Athenians beat them 2x :D), with A/E/S on the inner part of the attic peninsula, and the continental powers (other nations) behind them on, well, the continent. They keep mentioning universities or people going to "the peninsula" so I figure they're more inland so that there are peninsulas further out from them. Plus there's lots of islands nearby, for A/S to fight over. But I think all three countries have some sort of coastline...well, cliffs that descend to sea in Eddis, but still, that means it's not completely landlocked.

Oh your right, I went back and looked it up. Its Asia Minor they traded with, which is basically Turkey, (which is beside India? or is Turkey India? Argh geography.)

Ooops. I glimpsed back over the book I think I might have made up the Siberia place :)

I have another geography related question. Why do traders have to go through the Eddis mountain passes(and therefore pay tolls) to get between Attolia and Sounis? Because in The Theif they managed to go from Sounis to Attoila. I know its because it wasn't a really road they traveled on, by why don't Attolia and Sounis just make a real road on the path that they traveled on.

No, even thought they weren't on a road they had to go through Eddis to get from Sounis to Attolia. And in that same part, it says Eddis has the only transversable pass between the other two countries.

Er...actually, Turkey is in Eastern Europe, and India is a seperate (very large) country, waay off in Asia Minor. Turkey is right next to Greece, but is much larger. So the Turkey and Greece would have traded with Asia Minor. :) European Geography, which is notoriously shifty after WW2.

If you're not sure, check out this map I found (maximise the picture by clicking the bottom corner):

Er...really? As far as I know Siberia is a very large, cold place in Russia where the Tsar used to send people whom he didn't like. Or was that Lenin? *is bad at History*

I'm guessing that's because the road would still have to be built at least partially over Eddisian territory, and the Eddisians have no motive to allow this. Sea travel is probably possible, but it takes longer.

I believe every ruler of Russia sent poeple to Sirberia.

I didn't mean that I made up the real Siberia - I meant that I accidently imagined :) that Attolia had a winterland to exhile people she didn't like too.
