Yet another Question
Mar. 23rd, 2006 11:56 amDear Wonderful Author,
fabricalchemist,
anon8, and myself had a lively discussion this morning about the Continental Powers. We seem to have a disagreement about who they are. Are they a seperate political identity that has been holding back the Mede from overtly invading our three favorite kingdoms? Or are Sounis, Attolia, and Eddis, themselves the Continental Powers?
Of course, everyone's opinion is welcome. And clarification from Megan would be especially delightful.

Date: 3/24/06 05:19 pm (UTC)Can I ask why you don't want to give your editor a map? It would be very useful to us. Is it to keep things active in out orn imaginations and to allow you more leeway for change?

Date: 3/24/06 05:43 pm (UTC)So, we know Eddis is landlocked, and Attolia and Sounis have coastlines. Would they be on a peninsula, with Eddis squished between? Is their area like where Athens is now? Or like Corinth with a small strip of land joining it to the continent?
Yes, I had to get an atlas out to find the Attic peninsula. Good thing I work in a library.

Psht. Nonsense. Like Eddis, we all think you just might be able to walk on water and write circles around others. No pressure!

Date: 3/24/06 12:38 am (UTC)Which makes me think that Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis are like on one side of the continent and other countries are on the other side, with a peninsula (with Ferria and universities) somewhere in the middle.

Date: 3/24/06 03:16 am (UTC)Also, I think Eddis said in QOA that even if the CP does interefere , the conflict would still be fought on their turf, and they would do so for their own reasons. Eddis Attolia and Sounis would have to rely on skill more than numbers to defeat them; like plots and court intrigue and all the stuff Gen is so good at!
Great to be back!

Date: 3/25/06 02:40 pm (UTC)Good point about the CPs, Eddis Attolia and Sounis really have to handle the Mede themselves.
Re: Hey Caroline!
Date: 6/14/07 05:24 pm (UTC)I ALWAYS THINK OF 'FERRARA' AT THE TOP OF THAT POEM WHEN I SEE FERRIA.
JEEZ. WE REALLY ARE MIND-LINKED. IT'S FREAKING ME OUT

Date: 3/26/06 06:23 pm (UTC)Is Eddis, Sounis and Attolia all on Attica? Or is Sounis more near Sparta? Or is Mede Sparta? And the Continential Powers Turkey/Persia. Or is Mede in Persia? Argh, I'm awful at geography.
I too thought of Edd/Soun/Att as an island, but in KoA we find out the Attolia has sort of a Siberia type place were you can send annoying people. But she doesn't seem too worried about this border so I guess the land beyond it (real-life Europe?) is sort of like Alaska/Northwest Territories/Nunavit - since nobody acutally lives there, theres no need for a real border. Sort of like the Canada/Greenland border - where it is depends on what country you live in.
oh, and I was being sarcastic - people do live in Alaska/Nunavit/Northwest. There's even a walmart in Northwest.

Date: 3/26/06 06:35 pm (UTC)You could save an image on photobucket and post the link. Or try copying and pasting it. :) I'm not very good at this. About Asia, I'm pretty sure that it starts where Eastern Europe ends, about Turkey, and keeps going to China. That's not very specific, sorry. And I think the Greeks traded mainly with northern Africa and India.

Perhaps. That's an interesting point actually, but I don't remember the reference to QoA, about the Siberia type place. :) Need to re-read.

Date: 3/27/06 08:59 pm (UTC)Ooops. I glimpsed back over the book I think I might have made up the Siberia place :)
I have another geography related question. Why do traders have to go through the Eddis mountain passes(and therefore pay tolls) to get between Attolia and Sounis? Because in The Theif they managed to go from Sounis to Attoila. I know its because it wasn't a really road they traveled on, by why don't Attolia and Sounis just make a real road on the path that they traveled on.

Date: 3/27/06 10:17 pm (UTC)Er...actually, Turkey is in Eastern Europe, and India is a seperate (very large) country, waay off in Asia Minor. Turkey is right next to Greece, but is much larger. So the Turkey and Greece would have traded with Asia Minor. :) European Geography, which is notoriously shifty after WW2.
If you're not sure, check out this map I found (maximise the picture by clicking the bottom corner):

Ooops. I glimpsed back over the book I think I might have made up the Siberia place :)
Er...really? As far as I know Siberia is a very large, cold place in Russia where the Tsar used to send people whom he didn't like. Or was that Lenin? *is bad at History*

I'm guessing that's because the road would still have to be built at least partially over Eddisian territory, and the Eddisians have no motive to allow this. Sea travel is probably possible, but it takes longer.

Date: 3/28/06 01:03 am (UTC)I believe every ruler of Russia sent poeple to Sirberia.
I didn't mean that I made up the real Siberia - I meant that I accidently imagined :) that Attolia had a winterland to exhile people she didn't like too.
