Paint Question - how did you make them 100x100?!?

Um....well, I just made the icons at a larger size, the easier to work with, you see. Then when I upload them to Live Journal as my user pics and it automatically shrinks them to icon size, which sometimes results in loss of detail, which annoys me. Even if I make them originally at icon size, when they get uploaded, LJ makes them slightly fuzzy. Drives me crazy. Sometimes when I upload one and I see it after the shrunken size and LJ fuzzying, that maybe the font isn't a good option in terms of clarity, so I'll go back and change it.


Now I've got a question for everyone...As I mentioned above, I've been making these using Paint, and clearly this astounds everyone. I use Paint because that's what I happen to have on my computer. What do you guys use, and is there a free download anywhere for a better program? I'm not going to lie...Paint is kind of a pain.

Ugh, trying this again, because I was using bbcode instead of html the first time...

I really like Serif's Photoplus (http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/photoplus/). You can get a more basic version for free, or pay $10 for a slightly upgraded version. The only thing is, less people use it than say, GIMP, so it's harder to find tutorials and such if you need them.
