Mar. 24th, 2006 11:40 pmThe Transcript from tonights chat. Well, about half of it, as I actually forgot to record the first half. Sorry. :)
cheezluva: i rock out on my violin
checkers: my enthusiasm is greater than my talent
rowana: :) I'm sure your singing is wonderful.
rowana: Emo comes from the heart.
checkers: violin is great!
rowana: Violin! How cool.
checkers: hahaha. I got the heart, man!
anon8: mmmm, 4 seasons, on violin, great
rowana: :D The violin's fantastic, the instrument reminds me of 'fire and hemlock'
cheezluva: mmm, thanks. i'd like to say i'm good, but...
rowana: by diana wynne jones
cheezluva: i just started that today.
checkers: hey! my fire and hemlock just came yesterday from amazon
cheezluva: after finishing howl
rowana: It's a wonderful book. Polly reminds me ridiculously of me. Howl!
checkers: It's a very...thick...book
rowana: Which was your favourite scene in Howl?
rowana: It's a wonderful book. You will love it and carry it around with you, and long to visit Bristol.
cheezluva: decisions decisions...give me a minute.
checkers: I loved it when Howl got all sulky and spent time in the bathroom, and the slime stuff
rowana: :)
rowana: I liked the weed killer scene
checkers: And I LOVE Calcifer
rowana: :D yes!
rowana: I'm envious of Bear's Califer lamp.
cheezluva: i like the titles of the chapters (chapter 11, in which sophie expresses her feelings with weedkiller)
checkers: me too
checkers: haha
rowana: :) I guess you don't have the British edition - which has fantastic chapter illustrations to accompany the titles
checkers: wow, really.
checkers: I'm jealous
cheezluva: nope
rowana: Yes. Howl is camp. Wonderuflly so.
rowana: Sophie is fantastically drawn.
checkers: I also just got an illustrated Stardust by Gaiman. Beautiful
rowana: Stardust is fantastic, the illustrated version must be wonderful.
cheezluva: neil gaiman...loved coraline. so macabre
rowana: I've never read anything else by him, but I'm looking for reccs
checkers: Never read anything else by him.
rowana: My friend said something about sandman comics...
checkers: yeah, they look cool
rowana: ...or something
rowana: Yes. :) Is anyone else a poetry fan?
anon8: depends
rowana: on?
checkers: Not too much, I have to say. I like E E Cummings, he's my favorite
cheezluva: i don't read much poetry, but my fave is the highwayman
rowana: Has anyone else read John Donne? Simply because of the endless allusions to his work in Howl
cheezluva: sorry, no
anon8: ooh, yes, very romantic poetry
checkers: I saw that, and also in Stardust. Same poem
rowana: :) Yes, I noticed that. Although other Donne poems like 'The Sunne Rising' are alluded to.
checkers: I never "got" it, but now might have a better time with it. He's always been a little incomprehensible to me
rowana: :) He's a bit of a misogynist, which put me off at first
checkers: I don't have the classic education Ro has had. :)
rowana: I blame my teachers.
rowana: If I go off on a tangent again, stop me. :)
checkers: We love your tangents!
rowana: :D Thanks. But we are supposed to be discussing the books.
checkers: Ahem. Yes. How about this?
checkers: Why do you think Gen chose his rooms?
checkers: View? Secret exit?
rowana: ...that's very good
anon8: both
rowana: I'm leaning towards View.
checkers: I'm leaning towards secret exit
cheezluva: wasn't this in a discussion before?
rowana: :) A perfect balance.
anon8: i'm leaning towards view....and to seem like he and the queen weren't together
checkers: Have we discussed this?
rowana: Actually, I've changed my mind. The view doesn't seem intentional.
checkers: I don't remember
rowana: Secret exit.
anon8: cuz he didn't need a specific secret exit
checkers: what do you mean?
anon8: no, view was such an emphasis, it had to at least be part of it
anon8: and he could move around the palace at will
rowana: That was what I thought - but then, would Gen pick a set of rooms purely for a view which he could get from the rooftops?
anon8: i don't picture "secret exits" so much as secret passageways, but moving between the walls
checkers: Part, I agree. How did he get out of his room past his attendants if he didn't have a secret exit?
rowana: That's an interesting idea.
cheezluva: would he intentionally remind himself of his home? it seemed to make him so sad to see eddis...
rowana: But there'd have to be some way fo getting into the walls.
anon8: well, maybe a hidden panel
rowana: Perhaps it was a bit of both.
checkers: And, Irene was aboe to go through it, too
rowana: Good point cheezluva, but then again, he did look at eddis intentionally, asking for the chair to be moved.
cheezluva: mmm
anon8: well, stone megaron, so i thick walls possible hollow at places
rowana: And yes Checkers, I agree.
checkers: Ok, so why did Susa think it was important that the king looked out the window?
anon8: hey, go to college, get homesick...what do you do?...call home
anon8: not avoid home
cheezluva: that part made me sniff and look gratefully out the window
rowana: :)
checkers: Yes
anon8: that the king was weak...homesick...manipulable
checkers: Poor Gen
anon8: about Susa i mean
checkers: Oh, that makes sense
checkers: But wait
checkers: Susa didn't know about the view
rowana: It reminds me of something MWT mentioned on the thread - how bizarre it was than in medieval times, people in political marriages never saw their families again.
rowana: I didn't entirely understand the value of Costis' information to Susa
checkers: did he?
anon8: if the king's looking morosely out the window, he's not planning his next political move, conceivably
anon8: like, he's not actively doing something to take power
checkers: Good point
rowana: Good point. He was just confirming that the king was what the rumours said he was - a puppet?
checkers: Maybe just showing what Susa saw a sbeing worthless
checkers: as being
rowana: Yes, good point.
anon8: yeah
anon8: no threat
checkers: another typot :)
rowana: They do happen a lot here. :)
anon8: yeah
checkers: Do you thin if we asked her, MWT would tell us what Gen's plans for Costis are? I think that would be a not telling
anon8: too bad
anon8: i really wanted to know
rowana: definitely. Perhaps a knowing smile.
anon8: but i connected it to teleus's comment in the beginning
rowana: I really like Costis now.
rowana: Which comment?
checkers: what comment?
anon8: when gen wanted costis to serve him, and teleus asked him if he wanted costis detached from the guard
rowana: Oh yes!
checkers: Hmmm. And Gen said?
rowana: But after the events of that final morning which gen hadn't anticipated, is he still going to detach Costis?
anon8: at that time, he said no, and promoted Costis to lt.
rowana: But he later commented that he'd detach Costis the following morning.
anon8: oooo, okay, late for class, gotta run
anon8: be back in an hour
checkers: I would guess yes. He has a plan and he's been grooming Costis for it
rowana: Okay, bye!
cheezluva: what difference would it make if costis was detached or not?
checkers: Bye, anon! Have fun in class!
cheezluva: toodles
anon8: bye!
anon8: maybe you guys will still be here when i get back
rowana: Er, just a note by the way, I am recording this transcript. :)
anon8: k
anon8: cool
anon8: ok, bye
anon8 from x.x.x.179 left the chat
rowana: Costis woldn't want to be detached - the guard is his life
checkers: Oh, of course, viper Ro. Don't worry, I'm watching myself. :)
rowana: :D You love me really.
checkers: *smirkd*
rowana: And I don't mind changing anything.
rowana: Because I'm nice like that.
checkers: yes, you are. But it's cool how it is
rowana: :) Good. Sorry - Costis
checkers: Anyway, I think Gen is...well, maybe we should start a thread for predictions for the next book
checkers: I think Gen has major plans for Costis
rowana: I think that's an excellent idea
rowana: Yes, definitely. I'd actually like to see him continue as a main character.
cheezluva: I liked Aris
rowana: What do you think cheezluva?
rowana: Sorry. :) Yes Aris was nice. I liked the dynamics of his and Costis' friendship
rowana: I was re-reading the scene where Teleus pleas for mercy today. I noticed that costis stays just to hear Aris' fate.
rowana: Er, ignore the typos.
cheezluva: what typos?
rowana: pleas/pleads
checkers: I liked Aris, too. He seemed like such a normal guy. Oh! Did you notice when Telius says the "magic words" the wind blows the candles out?
cheezluva: oh
cheezluva: well don't i feel silly
rowana: ...no. Wow. must re-read again
checkers: Like the gods were affected by what he said
rowana: :) We should rename the conspiracy room the room of typos
rowana: I wish I'd read more thoroughly. The gods would be effected of course.
checkers: Typots. Ok, here's another, but give me a minute to look it up (I'm such a dork, my book is right here)
rowana: He was calling on Hephestia - right?
checkers: yes
rowana: Typots, yes:)
cheezluva: by the way, i posted...twice...i was the one who asked about archimedes
cheezluva: gotta go bye!
checkers: Bye!
rowana: Bye! Hope to see you around the forum. :)
checkers: Cool that another person showed up
rowana: Yeah. I guess Bear's awesome presence had an effect on some of them. :)
checkers: ha, could be
rowana: And the threat of fangs.
rowana: :)
checkers: ha.
checkers: Well, I should go, too.
checkers: dinner is not going to fix itself
rowana: Yeah, I should try and actually get some sleep tonight. :) Have fun!
checkers: You, too. Bye!
rowana: I'll stick the transcript and a speculation thread up tomorrow. :) Bye
A fairly significant chunk of the convo was lost, when we were discussing the nature of square dances and the mechanics of spinning, so I'll try to be better at recording next time. At the same time, does anyone know of any other decent chatroom sites, which allow the long term history of a chat to be recorded?
And just for the record, welcome to ex-lurkerdom Cheezluva. :)
